We had the good fortune of connecting with Dan Dobi and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dan, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Oh, I think it’s been pretty consistent since day 1… I think the balance falls on the fact that I’ve never had a 9-5 so I’m often ALWAYS “on call” with my work. It’s something a lot of filmmakers and creatives subscribe to. Don’t get me wrong, I take breaks, I work out, I play with my dogs, I go to the beach, but during the week, I’ve been known to be in my office till the moment I hit the pillow at night.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m kind of a “one man show” with the film stuff. I direct, produce, write, edit, shoot… I do ALL the things. How did I get here? I worked really hard, I took care of my health, I worked hard, I was a perfectionist, I went the extra mile, and I had a smile on my face. Was it easy? NOOOOOOO absolutely not, the ride (looking back) has been incredibly frustrating but I love what I do… I think just outworking the next guy, having a good work ethic, and keeping a smile on my face got me to where I’m at. As far as my brand/story… I’m just a guy that works really hard and am fully immersed in what I do. I’m not represented by anyone, I don’t have a team behind me, I’m just a one man band.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Food wise, here are my go-to’s… Brunch = Killer Shrimp in Marina Del Rey Lunchtime = I would do a burger and a Michelada at Hinano Cafe in Marina Del Rey. Pho = Pho Show in Culver City Sushi = Umi by Hamasaku in El Segundo… Pro Tip: Get the Twilight Roll. Drinks/Hangs (in the evening) Alibi Room or Hatchet Hall in Mar Vista. Dinner = Toss up between Rockin’ Fish and The Strand House… both right next to each other at the Manhattan Beach Pier.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Oh! For SURE my composer and one of my closest friends Hisham Dahud (aka RIZIK). He makes amazing music, works his ass off, and is a fantastic human. Seriously, go check him out!
