We had the good fortune of connecting with Felicia Howe and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Felicia, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
I’m In The business of making people feel good about themselves. I originally got into hairdressing because I loved the creativity, I always thought I would have an art career. But as I developed a client base I quickly learned that I loved helping people feel good about themselves. For over twenty years I’ve been in the hair industry and have become someone that people could talk to, that encouraged me to expand into herbalism, homeopathy and aromatherapy. When I opened Primrose Organic’s Salon in 2009 I wanted to offer the community a safe and healthy environment to receive their hair services. But Primrose has expanded into so much more supporting a wider range of community through my Apothecary. I spilt my time between LA and Portland Oregon where I grow my own herbs and flowers for the products that I make, I’ve expanded into so many new areas of healing I have really become a Holistic Hairstylist. I continue to make organic haircare products and have now expanded into bulk filling options trying to move away from packaging. I really hope more salons start doing this! Back when I first started working with Organics there wasn’t very many options but now so much has changed in the industry and it continues to evolve. I work as a guest artist at Zuzu Salon in Portland where we have set a wonderful bulk fill area in the salon people love it! And it’s become somewhat of a ritual for the community people go out of there way to come and refill their bottles they even bring their kids. Between my two business and between two cities I feel I can impact each community with what I have learned and what I can offer back to each one. With the covid19 pandemic it has made it very hard to work with clients and continue to do hair services, but I still have so much to offer the community with Primrose Apothecary and the holistic treatments I make for mental and emotional support. And of course this is all offered online, and if clients need someone to talk to there’s the phone and FaceTime.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I may have given you most of these answers from the first question LOL I’m always growing and evolving I feel like I’ve lived so many life’s within my career the last twenty years. I’m forever grateful and blessed I’ve worked in film, television and music I’ve owned two salons and continue to live for my passions. I’ve had my ups and downs but through it I’ve learned so much and continue to evolve. I feel that each phase and experience revels the next direction as a business the more experienced you become the more you realise that the biggest challenges will always be balance and the honesty of what makes you happy changes. For me what I have become to realise is that I like creating environments and experiences for people but owning a business that requires employees or management takes away from my passions and I’m happy with the idea of running a smaller business with a bigger online presence.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
