We had the good fortune of connecting with Galina Richardson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Galina, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
As an artist, you always hope your art will make a difference in this world. I think right now, when the world has been overwhelmed with COVID-19, creating art is more pertinent than ever. People are dying, people are suffering and people are scared. Art not only brings us beauty and positivity, it gives us strength and hope. It also reminds us of our humanity and importance of caring for one another.
A few days before California went on lockdown, a local musician bought one of my paintings hanging at a wine bar in downtown Ventura. He made a short music video featuring my artwork and encouraging people to turn to art and music to get through the pandemic. It made my day to hear him play guitar and speak about my art with such enthusiasm!
He may be just one person touched by my artwork, a tiny drop in our community, but something I created had a positive impact, and it’s more than I could ever hope for.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m intrigued and fascinated by the human face. It’s all about a gaze for me. When I paint or draw someone’s face, their eyes speak to me, they tell me a story, and I try to interpret it through brush strokes, lines, and colors. It’s a continuous learning process every time and that’s what I love about portraiture!
I’m currently busy creating commissioned art and painting for myself.
Earlier this year was an exciting time, my portraits were recognized at the annual open juried shows at the Ventura County Museum and the Thousand Oaks Gallery.
A number of my paintings are currently on display at Grapes and Hops Wine Bar in downtown Ventura. Before the lockdown I was also scheduled to show my portraits at Fox Jewelry and Gallery in an exhibit titled “Purely Portraits” with another local artist. Fox Jewelry and their owner Debbie Fox have been very supportive of local artists for as long as I can remember. It’s an honor to be invited! They exhibit local talents all year around. In fact, they are so busy showcasing and promoting local artists that I was booked for this show a year ago. Unfortunately, the show has been postponed like every other public event, small and big, until such gatherings are safe. These are surreal and crazy times we are living. It feels like the entire world has been put on pause. I’m lucky I can use this time to practice and improve as much as I can as an artist and as a person.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Aww! The beach of course! It’s my favorite place to run, along the coast taking in the natural beauty, vastness and freedom of the ocean, catching a glimpse of dolphins jumping in the waves, or maybe spotting a lazy seal, or pelicans flying in formation…So much to see and experience at the beach in Ventura! For a breathtaking view, climb up the windy road to the Cross! If you enjoy good food, specialty dishes, cocktails, wine, delicious deserts, you have so many options downtown and throughout Ventura. My favorite places are Lure, Himalaya, Capriccio’s, Grapes and Hopes Wine Bar, Winchesters, Immigrant Son Cafe, and Rumfish.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family. Kudos go to my two incredible daughters and husband. They are my constant source of inspiration and support.
My oldest daughter is such a great mom to her little step-daughter. I watch them interact and it blows my mind how natural she is at being a parent. I know from experience it is not as easy as she makes it look.
The youngest has recently started a new job at a dialysis clinic in the middle of the pandemic, which is pretty brave and selfless of her. She is helping people and making a difference in someone’s life every day.
I’m very fortunate that over the years my daughters and I have become best friends always looking out for each other. We share everything, bounce ideas off one another, and have so much fun on our girls’ only trips!
My husband is the best partner I could’ve hoped for. He has a unique gift of empowering me and making me feel like I can do anything because he believes in me.
