By far the most common conversation we have with the folks we interview is about work-life balance. Starting a business or pursuing a creative career makes finding work life balance really tough because there is no clear start and end to one’s work day. We’ve shared some of our conversations on the topic below.

Brianna Norris | Dancer & Psychiatric Social Worker

Work life balance is such an interesting topic to me because it sounds so easily attainable and yet many of us struggle with it. Many live a lifestyle where activities that fall under the ‘life’ category can also be considered ‘work’. Or even argued as non-negotiable in our day to day lives. We as people have the opportunity to wear many hats during our life and all at one time. Read more>>

Work life balance is really hard when you own your own business especially when you are just starting. I really struggled (and sometimes still do) with putting boundaries on working hours, but I came to realize that I am more productive during my work hours when I put parameters on myself. I value a strong work/life balance. Being the owner of a company, it’s tough to separate work and life because it’s all tied up together in a giant messy ball. However, since moving to LA from NY, I’ve put in a lot of effort to create that balance. Setting times where I don’t look at my phone, exercising, being outside more, walking the dog, and meditating have all helped immensely. Read more>>

Mikee Colet | Musician & Producer

A few years ago everything I did that was related to music was a hobby, and now it’s a profession! I think I have this in common with a lot of musicians, things we used to do for fun are now the things we have to do. I’ve definitely had to remind myself over the past few years to remember that and all it entails, but it’s a good problem to have. Read more>>

As a Professional Performer, work life balance can get very intertwined. I am in a career space where I am very passionate about what I do, so most days I do not feel like I am working. Remembering that my physical and mental health come first. Compromising that is self sabotage. Read more>>

Work/life balance is a complete myth. It’s an ideal that‘a been perpetuated like “you deserve the best” and “if you dream it, you can do it”. Reality is…no such balance exists. You are constantly making decisions (micro or macro) that will have some effect on some part of your existence and, more often than not, many decisions that affect us aren’t choices we get to make. hink my work now is my life so I don’t really think much about balance these days.
