We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelly Zeller and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kelly, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Before my kids were born, I was a high school biology teacher and I absolutely loved exercising my creativity to come up with lessons that were engaging for my students. Once I left the classroom to be a mom, I realized I missed flexing my creative muscles (finger paints and Play-doh weren’t cutting it, haha). I found brush calligraphy while scrolling Instagram during my daughter’s middle-of-the-night feedings and gave it a try. After A LOT of practice, I started teaching myself pointed pen calligraphy and loved everything about it! I ended up designing my sister’s wedding invitations and doing all of the signage and calligraphy for her big day, and it was just so much fun! I decided I wanted to create a business where I could get to know my couples and do what I love – create some of the most special pieces for the best day of their life. That’s how Look Good on Paper Co. was born!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
There has been a lot to learn as a small creative business owner and I feel fortunate that the creative community is so supportive and willing to share their knowledge. When I started Look Good on Paper Co., my main offering was calligraphy and hand lettering services. When I was asked to create a wedding invitation suite for a couple, I was initially nervous, but found that I absolutely adored the design process! I’ve since launched a collection of Semi-Custom Suites that I’m completely in love with and have added several invitation packages, including Elopement Packages, to my design services. One of my favorite parts of designing is incorporating personal details into a couple’s invitation suite. I recently did a watercolor painting of a couple’s favorite scenic waterfall that we’ll be using as their envelope liner, and created an abstract ocean design with alcohol ink for another couple getting married on a cliff in Malibu to use for their Save-the-Dates. I feel like every couple has such a unique and personal love story, they deserve equally unique pieces to tell that story for their wedding day – and I’m just the person to create them!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well, things are a little different these days with COVID-19 hanging around, but let’s pretend that’s not an issue…I’d have to say we’d probably spend the entire week at or near the beach. The beach path is perfect for walking or riding a bike, and when the tide is out early in the morning, it’s perfect for shell hunting. The Bolsa Chica Wetlands also have a great trail system for walkers and runners, and I just love the cool breeze, wildlife, and gorgeous views (especially at sunset)!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have to give a shoutout to Aimee Newlander of Weddings by Aimee for encouraging me to start designing wedding invitations in the first place. She had confidence in my design abilities and her support and encouragement has meant so much as I’ve expanded my business. She’s also the absolute sweetest and I love getting to work with someone who shares my passion for creating meaningful experiences for my clients. I also need to give a shoutout to Brooke Campbell of Brooke Nicole Events who always comes up with the most creative ideas and trusts me to bring them to bring them to life on paper! And of course I need to give a shoutout to my family, who put up with project supplies all over the place, constant reminders not to bump the table, and my long-winded tales about printing methods and paper products, and still love and support me anyway!
