We had the good fortune of connecting with Keyonna Tillman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Keyonna, how do you think about risk?
I think taking risks is a necessity in life, which can ultimately change your life. For me and my life/career, it’s always been for the better thankfully. Your entire situation can change if you take that risk—or it may not. Either way, it’s a learning experience.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Growing up in Brooklyn, New York, there were very few people around me with my hair texture. Most people who did, chemically straightened their hair. With countless disappointments, I was almost made to hate my hair. Thank god for my mother, who continued to encourage me to wear it natural. While I took my hair into my own hands, I created many different hairstyles and would occasionally be asked by family members to style their hair. Moving to Los Angeles, I decided I wanted to become an international hairstylist. I also vowed to be experienced with all hair textures— especially curly hair. It wasn’t easy in the beginning. from continuing my education, working hard as a hair assistant, to being a full-time hairstylist with newly obtained knowledge in the beauty industry, it has allowed me to travel all across the world. To working onset and being booked for celebrity clients, has been an amazing journey. Being an experienced curly hair specialist helps my clientele base be very diverse, which keeps me very busy as a hairstylist. I’ve been extremely honored to teach every single client who sits in my chair, to love every strand of their hair. With my years of experience, I also decided to create two haircare products for all textures of hair. I’ve also became an educator because, I feel like it’s my duty to teach and give back all that I’ve learned in the beauty industry. I also have a online store called Kurlified Brands, where you can shop beauty online. There’s always going to be stumbles and setback along way but, as long as you remain focused and hard working—all things are possible. You should never give up no matter how long it takes. I’m forever learning, thankful, and grateful, to have built this wonderful career.

Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
Los Angeles is filled with so many wonderful places. For fine dining, Katsuya, Sushi Dan, as well as Mastro’s, are some of my favorite go-to restaurants to stop by. And to work off all those calories, I’d go hiking in Runyon Canyon, or even bike ride in Santa Monica.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I like to give a shoutout to my family in Brooklyn, without them there is no me. To my mother and beloved father, to my brothers— I adore and love you all. To Cynthia Thomas, who allowed me get my hands wet for the first time. Shoutout to Capella Salon, for being my first salon where I’ve built and learned amongst other amazing stylists. To my friend Megan Herrera-Schaaf, I love you and thank you for introducing me to set life, tv, film, and being that supportive friend who inspired me to reach for the stars with no fear. To Dean Banowetz, the hollywood hair guy who taught me so many tips and allowed me to meet so many people in the hair industry. Cory Rotenberg, another amazing hairstylist who I’ve learn from and spent days with honing our craft. To Instyler, thank you for always believing in me and giving me a opportunity to work for your company. To my hair community Cortney, Lyndese, Allen, Melissa, Cristy, Andrea, Jonathan, Karina, Jen, Ghanon, Carmen, Melissa— I love you guys.
