Kira Cahill and Olivia Dahan | Founders & Owners

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kira Cahill and Olivia Dahan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kira and Olivia, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Founding Bold Box was a very natural progression for us. We both grew up by the ocean and have been actively involved in ocean conservation since 2007. Being in the eco-space, we found ourselves readily giving advice and doing quite a bit of product research on the quest to live more sustainably. For us, starting Bold Box felt like a necessity to fill a gap in the market and spread our knowledge on sustainability to the masses. It was a constant struggle to find affordable, high-quality, chic eco-friendly products. So we had to ask ourselves: “WHY is it so hard to find products that we love in a space that should be accessible?” Our answer: Be the solution. Help people figure out what parts of sustainability is sustainable for their lifestyles. Create and source eco-friendly products that are easy to use, colorful, and affordable. If you want to be a leader in a space, you have to blaze forward and truly be the change you wish to see. We have a subscription box that provides people with eco-friendly alternative to every day products. Our biggest wish was that people would come to us and see that our arms are open wide to all. At Bold Box we celebrate the simple act of doing better. Changing your lifestyle is a big decision, and we are here to help each customer do just in ways that work for them. We believe that small changes can make a huge difference. The environmental space can feel judgmental, which deters people from even trying. We needed Bold Box to be different, which is why we celebrate imperfectly doing one’s best, which in turn, beautifully benefits the planet. Be Bold. Be Better. Be YOU.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Bold Box is an eco-friendly lifestyle company with a subscription box and online store! We are the only full-lifestyle eco-friendly subscription box company on the market. We focus on curating the best eco-friendly home, on-the-go, personal care, and wellness products. At Bold Box, we help our customers discover what aspects of sustainability are sustainable for them! We don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all mentality when it comes to living sustainably because, to put it simply, what works for one person might not work for another. We created Bold Box as a solution to over-priced, poor quality, bland products. Our boxes, shipped quarterly, have 8+ full-sized products, and are a $200 value for only $59.99! Our biggest challenge has been re-wiring people’s mentality that sustainable living is difficult and expensive. Because we aren’t just a one-product company, our challenge is teaching people how to make actual, permanent, lifestyle switches. We provide easy to use products that are accompanied by instructions, fun blogs, and photos. We want people to know that we don’t believe in being perfect, but in simply being better. We are on this journey with our customers and celebrate our successes while championing the moments of learning.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We would recommend starting the morning off with coffee at Go Get ‘Em Tiger in Larchmont Village followed by a walk around that gorgeous neighborhood. From there we would pop up to Griffith Observatory (you can NEVER go to Griffith too many times.) Depending on where our friend was from we’d of course recommend going to the beach! A cute trip to Malibu tends to add a “wow factor” to any visit. Our tip is to bring a trash bag and gloves with you to do a little cleanup while enjoying the beach! We’d stop for lunch at Malibu Farms and then swing back to Hollywood just in time for a movie night at Hollywood Forever Cemetery. We are fairly dedicated to our Sunday routine of going to Melrose Trading Post, which takes place in the Fairfax High School Parking lot. Dinner? Either cook some fresh sustainable fish from Santa Monica Seafood (their sustainable fish options are amazing!) or we’d head to Zinque on Melrose followed by dancing the night away at Good Times at Davey Waynes.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We absolutely have to give a shoutout to Oceana! We met at an Oceana event, donate a portion of sales to Oceana, and can thank Oceana for the development of our environmental education. They are one of the most incredible international organizations. If you want to come do a beach cleanup with us, we do them every-other month in Santa Monica (on hold until August due to Covid health restrictions).
