We had the good fortune of connecting with Maleka Ellis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maleka, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Taking risks is everything to me. My whole company (the Siren & Co.) was built on a risk. I started this company with nothing, but a laptop and an idea. I had no video equipment, no audio equipment, and no clients. My social media footprint was nowhere to be found, I didn’t even have a website. I had nothing – well, almost nothing. I had friends. I had friends getting married, friends willing to lend me equipment, and friends just willing to help me start my business journey. I started a business and all I knew were the basics. I rolled the dice on starting a new chapter of my life that could have potentially bankrupted me in the city of L.A. Yes it has been a struggle, and yes there are some things I would have definitely done differently. I’ve learned a lot about myself through this risk taking adventure, and that is something I wouldn’t take back.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a boutique wedding videographer and I cater to the creative. Storytelling is my art. Every wedding I film is different and unique, and my job is to tell that story. I challenge myself to set myself apart with my editing. Intercutting audio and video to make fun, high energy, music dancing videos!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This is an easy question. If you’re visiting LA you have to hit the iconic spots. Hollywood Sign, the Chinese Theater and Pinks Hot dogs. You can’t skip Disneyland or the Magic Castle. But you also have to hit up the local area’s like Highland Park Bowl, The Getty Museum or just riding bikes on the Santa Monica pier.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
To be honest there are so many. First to my best friend Stephanie. She was the first wedding I filmed at the Siren & Co. To the mentors of the Honest workshop. Press Films and Miguel Garcia Studios. The photographer Vanessa from XO and Fetti photography for taking my branding photos. Candace from Spin the Dial productions for introducing me to groups on Facebook and Crystal from Crystal lily photo for introducing me to the Rising Tide.
