We had the good fortune of connecting with Mary Breedlove and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mary, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
Adaptability. Gone are the days of a traditional, linear career trajectory, for most. I personally love change. I have moved quite a lot in my life and have now had about 4 different careers, give or take. I used to feel insecure about my need for change – like I was an unsettled person. But now I look at it as an asset. Each of these moves and careers has taught me to be adaptable in new situations and led me to where I am now. I believe there is much to learn from pushing your personal boundaries of comfort. When I opened Breedlove Beauty Lab, I learned that every single day was going to offer up a new challenge. Even the most detailed business plan cannot predict the real-life situations that will arise daily. These unexpected situations force you to think and work differently. Being able to move and shift and roll with the punches is a must for this fast-paced world we live in.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Breedlove Beauty Lab is an infrared sauna, beauty & wellness studio. Our 30-minute sauna sessions will help you sweat, detox, relax, rejuvenate and leave feeling better than when you walked in. Our goal is to make infrared sauna therapy accessible to all, and provide a beautiful space for healing and relaxation. We were closed for 3 months due to Covid-19, briefly re-opening in June only to be mandated to close again. This has been a trying time for everyone, and we looking forward to once again offering a service that boosts immunity, promotes relaxation, and heals the body & mind. I believe one thing that sets us apart is that we are a true small business, dedicated to supporting our community. Our customers are our priority, and we hope they feel that upon every visit. Being forced to close due to a pandemic was not something I anticipated as a business owner. Being that we are a small business, the offers of support have been incredibly heartwarming. While not able to offer our sauna services, I decided to “beef up” our retail offerings and create self-care packages as gifting options. We have always had a small retail boutique within our studio, but highlighting our products in this time allowed for our customers to give themselves and others a little treat during very uncertain times. The continued support from near & far is what keeps me going and I’ll never forget the generosity. We are ready to come back stronger and better than ever, with three new saunas in the lineup, and we cannot wait to see our customers again soon.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh I love this! Let’s make it a westside tour (home is where the heart is!). Straight off the plane to Breedlove Beauty Lab to sweat out the travel ick…seriously. Grab a quick caffeine fix next door at Love Coffee then off to The Santa Monica Proper Hotel for check-in (the decor is divine, as is their rooftop bar). The rest of the weekend is free skate but these would be my must-dos on the westside: – Zinque: just my all-time favorite for everything – Dinner at The Tasting Kitchen – Drinks, dancing, people-watching at Roosterfish – An early morning beach walk to beat the crowds – Brunch at the Malibu Pier – The Getty Museum always – Sunset at Casa del Mar – Santa Monica Farmer’s Market for healthy food and people-watching
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Oh wow, there are so many! For the sake of brevity; I will say my parents, as they will always be the biggest source of hope & inspiration together. Separately, my Mom was my biggest cheerleader and she’s been my guardian angel in opening Breedlove Beauty Lab. No matter what, my Mom supported me and I hope she’d be proud to see how far I’ve come. My Dad (now retired), was an entrepreneur in the truest sense of the word. He is also whip smart, funny, honest, fair and loyal. My Mom the social butterfly/caretaker, and my Dad, the leader, have been the most amazing examples in every aspect of my life. To this day, I seek guidance from my Dad on all things business…he often tells me to trust my gut (not wanting to overstep or impose his opinions) but, his support and guidance mean the world. I’d be remiss to not shoutout my family and close friends, as well. I know how lucky I am to have an incredible support system.
