We had the good fortune of connecting with Maya Myles and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maya, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Having a work life balance is extremely important in order to prevent burnouts, but since the start of Covid-19, my work life balance has been non existent. I currently have a full time job as a Public Communications Officer, this job is my main source of income as I continue to work towards building my brand. Since having the privilege to work at home, I find myself working outside of my designated hours. This leaves me with little to no time to further develop my shirt designs or paintings, and my inconsistent schedule makes it difficult to reach out to family/friends.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I recently noticed that I express myself quite differently depending on the creative outlet I’m using . When painting, I am more of a mixed media artist, I love working with anything that can make my paintings look 3D. With photography, I love taking street portraits, and high fashion/editorial style photos. When it comes to designs for my graphic tees, I look to streetwear brands like Diamond Supply, and Obey for inspiration. I then try to make something cool and fun for young black girls. I’ve always loved fun graphic tees, but never found any catering to black girls in a way that I liked. It can be challenging at times for me to dedicate enough time towards developing my skills in each craft. For example, I didn’t make any personal paintings last year, but did 6 shoots, and designed 10 shirts. But I am finding ways to incorporate all of my talents into one.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I absolutely love museums, my favorite spot in the city is The Getty! Its a place filled with amazing views, beautiful art, and you can even take some great photos. We would then hit up some awesome farmers markets and thrift stores.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to shoutout my parents! They have encouraged my creativity and motivated me to to accomplish anything I work towards.
