We had the good fortune of connecting with A.v. Hamilton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi A.V., how has your work-life balance changed over time?
My work life balance as an artist has changed over time as the need for me to dedicate more time to my craft has become greater. When I first started my journey, I was working with little knowledge and experience, but as I grew more capable and confident in the process to develop my sound, I fell in love with the process and wanted to dedicate more time to it to become better. The struggle to balance that with other parts of life can be much sometimes, and it is always evolving.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart from others is the sound that I have, the charisma that I put into everything I do, and the dedication I have to the process of creating music. Where I am today in my journey (and I’m still on the journey) was accomplished by hard work of course, but being extremely delusional about myself and the possibilities there are for me to succeed. You have to be obsessive about where you see yourself climbing to, because it will not look possible to a “realistic” person, or to your family, or to your bank account. But like we say, if it was easy, everyone would do it. Making your mind up to be obsessed with learning something until you’re great at it is not for softies and someone will make their mind up for you if you don’t have clarity of your own path. Being spiritually and emotionally mature is extremely valuable in any craft as well, as having faith in God is even more important than having faith in yourself, and you must be able to think rationally to deal with people and their intentions. What I want the world to know about my brand and story is that there are still people who can accomplish something great without compromising themselves, and can change the narrative of how art can be consumed. I also want to set the narrative of communication through multiple sources of art, not just one, which is music for me. The human mind is amazing and evolves so effortlessly when we allow our perspective to be expanded. And if we can all do that then we might be able to help eachother live with love and harmony.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Ok so I’m multidimensional so you’re going to hear a variety of stops right now.
Let’s say they get here on a Saturday night and their week in LA starts on Sunday. I’m gonna take them to E Faith (my church) on Sunday morning and let them hear the word of God to set the tone for the week, and hear the great band we have at the church. Then we’ll go to Leimert Park for lunch and get some soul food and walk around with the people. Monday we’ll drive through downtown and see the city lights and go to the Intercontinental hotel for brunch and mimosas at the 70th floor lobby. Then it’s back to work for me cuz it’s Monday. Tuesday we catch the Laker and Warriors game at the Staples Center (Crypto if you’re not from the LAnd) and get some cooked hotdogs outside the stadium. Wednesday we go to the studio in Santa Monica for a long day session and make some music for some time. Thursday we head to venice beach, play a game of basketball, go to the dispensary and pick out some of Cali’s best weed, and then we’ll rent bikes and ride down Santa Monica peer and watch the sunset then hit Bubba Gump for dinner. Friday, I’ll bring my friend to Pasadena (my side of town) and we’ll start the day by going to the Huntington library for some quiet meditation and great scenery. We’ll hit Canterbury Records and pick up some vinyls to take back home, hitup my favorite sandwich spot for lunch, and then it’s time to get ready for Cold Summer, my club residency that I DJ on Friday nights. We’ll turn up for the night, meet cool people and hear great music. Saturday morning it’s time to get up early and go on a hike to get rid of that hangover (lol) and take in some fresh air and thank God for the week. Then we get some healthy lunch and I rent an old school Chevy 64 Impala to drive my friend back to their hotel down the 10 freeway as we listen to oldies and take in the city skyline one more time. We’ll get street tacos in Inglewood, then say our goodbyes. This is how we do it on the west coast.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout goes out to the 1500 Sound Academy, and particularly Alexandria Dopson, my vocal coach. She is a great teacher and motivator who has taught me much about dedicating yourself to your craft. The 1500 or Nothin band being the foundation of our education at the academy. Understanding the fundamentals of music and how to navigate the business is key for a long career in this field. I also want to dedicate a shoutout to my Aunt Racquel, who is by my side for everything, and always willing to support my every move and crazy endeavor in my career. Without her I’d be going mentally insane right now lol.
