We had the good fortune of connecting with A-WAY and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi A-WAY, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Outside of solidifying the ownership over my own career as an artist I wanted to help my peers/other artists by helping navigate them through the music business in development, distribution and more; sharing the knowledge I’ve learned in the music business. As an artist I built on the Hu$tle Ward brand throughout my career that was founded by the late great “Tony Logic” and after he passed away I continued the vision and built it to what it is today. I looked up to young record label owners like “Master P”, “Birdman”, “Jay Z”, “Rick Ross”. and I’ve always saw myself along the list in building a legacy that changed the lives of many and inspired the world. It was a leap of faith that showed me anything is possible if you keep God with you & ju$t hu$tle.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a versatile artist and I take pride in that. Most artist you hear give you mostly one emotion whether its sad angry or happy now and days. I believe I developed a healthy balance by my pops having a well diverse catalog from “earth, wind, & fire” to “50 Cent”. After falling in love with the art of freestyling and performing, I was an artist before I knew what it was to be one. I like to speak to each emotion while expressing my experiences in life throughout my music. Hu$tle Ward is home of the platinum sound. Although we’re all different and solo artist, our vibe is to have records that hold no limits when it comes to demographic, region or age. We don’t have drill or conscious sound like a usual Chicago artist. I feel like we all find a healthy balance in that blend on a national scale of hiphop, r&b, and pop. I am excited about all the new music coming from Hu$tle Ward not just from me but all the Hu$tle Ward artist like, Kollege’s “Red Room”, “Meechi Meechi’s “Hotline Deluxe Ep”, & Ohajij’s “3Train”. Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
It would depend on the friend because my view of fun is work and that may not be theirs. haha lol but no if we’re in Chicago I would definitely take them to Harolds, take them ova East, prolly hit one of them downtown clubs or club O or something after we get the best tree of course. lol na but other than that we’re at the studio, a. video shoot or a show with it for sure though. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shout out my beautiful daughter Aniah, for being my reason my love and legacy. My brother Frank although he is no longer with us he continues to be my daily motivation as it was with him I shared this passion. My mom for showing me its possible to bid on yourself as an entrepreneur. My pops & ma for molding me into everything that I am from the musical interest from him being a Dj, to the lessons of survival, determination and manhood that helped shaped me. My loving grandmother for always keeping me in line and never letting me fail, without her there’s no telling where I would be today. To my Aunti Lisa and uncle mike for all of their love and support. My uncle Rick for taking me and Frank to all those talent shows and really rehearsing with us teaching us the essential skills of performing in front of a crowd at a young age. My cousin Danielle for helping me get the opportunity to perform on BET’s that started off my professional career. To Meechi Meechi for the daily inspiration you give with just your creativity and loving spirit alone. To my entire Hu$tle Ward team for not only believing in the vision and the label but believing in themselves enough to hu$tle for the win. I consistently learn from each of you and I thank God for putting you all in my life. To my lil brother Jay-Boogy who inspires me to be a great example of a man to you. I’ve had experienced many blessings amongst the many people God has blessed me to come across in life family and or friends and I want to shout out you even if I didn’t get to your name as it is millions more to name but just know I value you it all big or small and you know how we coming.
