We had the good fortune of connecting with Abigail Keever and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Abigail, why did you pursue a creative career?
Growing up I loved the idea of fluidity and change and felt that having a creative career would allow that to be apart of my daily life. One week im building a muscle suit and the next im doing a period piece. I love that versatility.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a voracious artist, if im not creating i’m not happy. Most of my drive is to acquire skills which has led to forays into Special Fx makeup, textile art, and writing. I feel like every skill I aquire helps me in my Costume Design. It’s never easy to be an artist and i’d credit my scrappiness to any success i’ve had. Just like on a job, you make it work. If you want someone to design a show or a commercial, my belief is you’d want someone with wide sweeping knowledge to make sure every single idea is possible and executed perfectly. That’s what I try to bring to the table, anything imaginable, is achievable.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
It’s so different to answer this during Covid times. There might be some weeping on my end trying to imagine what to do but i’ll give it a shot. Breakfast- Homestate. As a Texan nothing beats a perfect flour tortilla and they kill it. Their chicory coffee is also perfect too. You might want to buy a sea salt cookie and put it in your bag for later, you wont be dissapointed. Easton Haus- My friends run the most thoughtfully curated furniture company that finds little treasures all over the place. I would definitely recommend popping by their new store front in Inglewood and saying hi the most wonderful people you will ever meet. Esqueleto- beautifully curated store with impeccable art and jewelry great for an afternoon of trying on and getting yourself something shiny. Pho Cafe- I love pho more than anything in the world. I could eat it everyday all day long and I love this place. Once you have a belly full of soup best to head to the roller rink! Moonlight Rollerway- I love this place, it reminds me of being a kid and it’s a perfect throwback to better days. Magpies Softserve- for a delicious treat their malted milk chocolate will blow you away! Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
One of my first jobs I had in LA was at a production company that made a lot of comedy and it was the people there that allowed me to grow and maintain pretty steady employment while i developed my skills. To this day I have met a wonderful group of friends and collaborators that are the most talented and inspiring people i’ve ever met.
