Meet Adam Turney: Singer, Performer & Yoga Teacher

We had the good fortune of connecting with Adam Turney and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Adam, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I feel like risk taking is so important and it typically comes from a place of fear. I think it’s important to acknowledge that fear and learn to work through it if it’s something you are truly passionate about accomplishing. This can mean taking baby steps towards a goal instead of just focusing on the end result. For me, pursuing a career as a performer has been a risk in itself! This career definitely comes with uncertainty and the unknown, but many times the unforeseen has led me to opportunities that would’ve normally not existed had I not taken the risk in the first place.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a performer, vocalist, and yoga teacher. I started off solely focusing on a theatrical career, but have now expanded my desires to include a career in the session/backup singing world. I am frequently busy with auditioning for different projects, making self tapes from home, and recording from home. Aside from that, I have also recently launched my yoga business Flow & Play, focusing on creating an inclusive space for all bodies to enjoy the benefits of a yoga practice. With Flow & Play I have been able to partner with organizations that I am passionate about who seek to end the stigma surrounding mental health. As someone with Bipolar Disorder, this is very important to me. I not only want to be an entertainer who cares about pursuing my art, but also creating a safe space for others and spreading awareness around Black mental health issues and wellness.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was visiting the area, I would definitely take them to the Hollywood Sign hike. I used to live close by it and would do it all the time. Griffith Observatory would also be a fun place for a nice picnic. We would go to the Santa Monica Pier to experience the beach and walking along the pier for some shopping. I’d take them to some of my favorite food spots, like Blue Jam Cafe, fonuts, and the Malibu Cafe. Finally, I’d take them out for a fun night in West Hollywood for drinks and to experience that night life.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My collegiate a cappella group, the UCLA ScatterTones. Being in that group in college gave me the confidence to truly realize my potential in not only a performing context, but also with what I bring to the table as a leader. The group helped me to love my voice and I want to continue to use my voice to help others find theirs. I’ve made lifelong connections with some of my fellow members and still work with a some of them in the industry as well.
