Meet Agnes Ashi | Hair Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Agnes Ashi and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Agnes, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk feels like stepping into a space of both uncertainty and limitless possibilities simultaneously. It can be intimidating, but the truth is, not taking risks can be just as risky. In my career and life, every significant leap forward has been a risk, firmly grounded in faith.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a Hair Artist. I am very passionate about creating beautiful hairstyles inspired by both culture and my clients’ visions. I enjoy finding creative ways to elevate any hairstyle, from elegant bridal styles to more expressive and editorial styles.
My journey started in Cameroon, where I began learning braiding techniques. As I continued through college, my interests in art, photography, history, and cultural anthropology naturally influenced my approach to hair styling. The road has been consistently rewarding, despite the many challenges I’ve faced. Each obstacle has presented me with an opportunity to level up and become a better stylist.
One important lesson I’ve learned along the way is the significance of self-care. By prioritizing my own well-being, I can be fully present for my clients. You can’t pour from an empty cup. As a hairstylist, I hold space for many women, and I believe it is essential to ensure that they leave my chair feeling seen, heard, and cared for. Taking care of myself enables me to offer the best possible experience to those I serve.
I strongly believe in nurturing and attending to hair in a way that aligns with its unique needs, particularly for black women. Hair holds deep personal and cultural importance. It deserves to be treated with utmost love and care.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d plan a visit to some of the incredible museums in DC and Baltimore. Exploring the Smithsonian museums, such as the National Museum of African American History and Culture or the National Gallery of Art, would be a must.
To experience the vibrant nightlife, we can’t miss happy hour on U Street, known for its lively atmosphere and diverse range of bars and restaurants. Catching a concert at the historic Howard Theater would be an unforgettable experience, and we could also check out open mic nights at Busboys and Poets for some spoken word and poetry.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a shoutout to my parents for establishing my starting point. My very supportive friends, my family, the creative community in the DMV, and Texture Management
