We had the good fortune of connecting with Ajia Munns and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ajia, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I started off as an actress and quite frankly I’ve been acting all my life, mostly acting up. I made the brave decision to move to Los Angeles in 2012 right after my grandfather’s passing. Throughout my time in LA I have had some amazing opportunities, being the lead in two pilots was the highlight of my career. However, I have also been a part of so many indie projects and over the years I observed a lot! This led me to co-create my organization called Woven Colors which invites artist of all kind to network, share, and showcase their talents amongst each other. I am very proud of it as well as stepping into producer and writer roles now. I produced my first series If I Knew You Were Coming independently with four other amazing women, it was awe-inspiring and this experience amounts to others, showed me I could run my own company. So I started Geminae Productions! I saw the entertainment industry as a whole and knew I was needed. I’ve always been inspired by Oscar Micheaux, Barbra Streisand’s Yentl, Tyler Perry, Hattie McDaniel, Eddie Murphy, Regina King, the Wayans brothers, Issa Rae, and so many more. From afar these people have taught me it’s possible to excel wearing many hats. I want to make an impact on the world in a creative way and inspire others as I have been inspired.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Geminae Productions is a multi-platform production company that aims to inspire the world through creative power centered around arts and culture. In addition, we help provide opportunities to disadvantaged filmmakers. It was not easy at all starting Geminae Productions. We acquired our name from the Latin word Geminae meaning “twin.” I was conceived as a twin but born alone. The name pays homage to my unborn twin. Our name was chosen carefully with honor and tribute. I’ve had many challenges so many I wouldn’t know where to start in sharing them but it’s worth it because I wake up every day excited about life and what we are/will produce. It’s important to me to make my mark on this world. To take up the battle the ones before me laid down and carry the creative arts to new heights and achievement.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love hanging out in the city of Los Angeles. If I had a friend or family visiting places I would take them would include driving by The Marathon Store to saute Nipsey Hussle, then we would go to Simply Wholesome to get goods and a bit to eat. Next, I would take them hiking. Runyon Canyon is great as well as undiscovered hiking places near Malibu and other places outside of LA. For brunch, we would go to Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills and Met Her At A Bar. For dinner, Messob Ethiopian Restaurant, Republique, Beauty & Essex, Miceli’s, TAO, and Katana LA, just to name a few. After dinner is E.P. & L.P. for drinks and hanging out as well as Wally’s Beverly Hills for wine. Other cool places would include the beach (any), walking around The Grove (my favorite place), Porto’s Bakery and Cafe, and visiting downtown.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shout out 19 Keys. If you don’t know who he is, you should. He is the number one thought leader in the world and is making the world better by dedicating his time and energy to his community while promoting family, financial action & educations, and the ability to do for self.
