We had the good fortune of connecting with Akeisha & Daijelle Howard and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Akeisha & Daijelle, what role has risk played in your life or career?
When I hear about the word risk I always smile to myself, because I am only here as the result of the many risks I took to start this business. I have learned that to be successful in life we have to take the necessary measures to make that happen. When my daughter and I started HerTruSelf, a movement that builds girls’ self-esteem, boosts confidence, and develops emotional intelligence, I looked at my finances and knew that in order for me to make this business a success I had to venture into the world of risk-taking. By doing this I was able to expose myself to many opportunities which have led to our brand being discovered.

What should our readers know about your business?
Hertruself was created by my 15 yr old daughter to help young girls and teens, by instilling confidence, promoting emotional intelligence, developing healthy self-esteem, building resiliency, and boosting their confidence, through a series of self-developing activities found in our motivational box which also aids as a social-emotional learning tool. With powerful tools, such as our positive emotion flaps, affirmation cards, daily motto scrolls, mirrors, and negative emotion pouches, it encourages girls to have a positive attitude and teach values, such as the power of determination, that will help them complete their future endeavors. We want these girls to be able to trust in their own merit, know their worth, and take risks!

We are definitely proud of this motivational box and the impact it has on the girls who are using it.

The road to having a successful business is not as easy as I thought. There were many stumbling blocks, sleepless nights, and emotional breakdowns during this process. We are still trying to overcome the obstacles by just being consistent, having a positive mindset, and most importantly praying and asking God for guidance through this journey.

Throughout this process, we have learned that nothing good comes easy and you just need to keep pushing and do not give up.

We want the world to know that if you are a parent, guardian, caregiver, counselor, or organization that serves girls we at HerTruSelf would love for you to explore the motivational products that we created to help change the way girls may feel and think about themselves.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Very interesting question! The first place I would take them is to the beach. Not a lot of my friends live in areas where the beach is close by, so I would definitely want them to enjoy the sun. The next place would be Kale My Name, a restaurant with vegan dishes that are absolutely to die for! Then as the week passes, we would explore other options of interest, which really just depends on what my friend wants to see.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shout out my daughter Daijelle for the support that she gives me on a daily basis.
