We had the good fortune of connecting with Akilah Gipson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Akilah, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The important factor behind my brand is the people’s success. This program was created for the people, so when they are reaching their goals, becoming health conscious, losing weight, gaining a positive body image, or just gaining confidence is the mark of my success as a coach. This is about the movement not about me.

What should our readers know about your business?

Body Werk is unique fitness concept in the sense of how it impacts one’s life not just their body. We have a saying, and it goes “Body Werk is my Therapy”, beyond working out and losing weight Body Werk leads you to become a fitness enthusiast. You become more vested in your health and your inner being. The results of clients losing weight, establishing self-care routines, gaining a positive body image, learning to be unashamed, and connecting with their body is not the typical outcome in group fitness.

The program has grown so much. When COVID hit we had just moved into the building we are in now, under Princes Feet Dance Academy which had just opened as well. We had to shut down after 1 month of a great challenge of 50 people, it had grown so fast I had to add more than 2 classes during the week. I was so bugged and discourage and could not see any way of rising out of being shut down. But God provided resources once I just took the leap and jumped into doing classes online. It was rough the first 2 months but over time it got better. I adjusted and just submitted to the way the world was going, I told myself I was going to jump ahead before it jumped me. Going online actually grow my business and provided a greater opportunity for me to reach more people. I learned to not stare at the damage just find out how to get it fix.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Great places to visit here is by the water. Anywhere there is water there is healing. And hitting up a street taco spot in LA is a most.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The walls in my village are strong. With so many pivots & challenges that come along with running a business you need a support system. My family and my Body Werk Fit Fam hold me down. I have some consistent clients who have become ambassadors of the Body Werk brand, they have made it impossible for me to n ever give up, my assistant coach, Shammy who comes in when I need to tap out. The function and operation of what Body Werk is and will be would still be just a vision if my fiancé (Bailey) did not push the entrepreneur out of me. My mom (Rene) aids me when I am too tired or have no more lift to give myself, and next to her is my sister (Ronnice) she’s, my wingman. I have amazing’s friends who support Body Werk finically with their sponsorships for people to take class, and there is not 1 family member that I have that does not promote or support what I do. It is a blessing to have and know great people, I love my village.
