We had the good fortune of connecting with Akori and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Akori, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk is scary but worth it. Sometimes you fear the unknown but after getting over that hurdle you’re just happy you pushed yourself no matter the outcome. At a few points of my life I went completely broke, like literally no money to my name just because I was trying to take a leap of faith for my dreams. I feel like it built my character and has helped me to understand risking everything is sometimes worth it if you push through.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My work is complex and I still don’t feel like I’ve been seen for who I am, but it will happen soon, with time of course. I just love to create. I don’t think of myself as just one title. When people ask me what I do, I usually don’t even know what to say because my focus is always on multiple endeavors. I’m a singer, candle crafter, freelance pet sitter, creative director, video editor, model, writer, event curator. I do so many things. Right now, I’m super excited about the event I have coming up in October 2022 called “Vibin’ @” ! It’s a super cool environment for independent artists of any facet to express without censorship and for those who just like good vibes to really embrace a good time without judgment. I’ll be posting about it more soon on my instagram! I’m also excited about the new songs that I have coming out. I’ve always doubted myself, never felt like I belong anywhere and sometimes still struggle with this. Lately I’ve been able to bounce back even quicker and regain control of my emotions and frustrations related to doubt. I’ve mostly learned not to limit myself, no one should. I want the world to know that I am in my cocoon, but there are a lot of things that will slowly come out and they will show how creative I can be, just how versatile I can be.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh man this is fun. Well, most nights would probably start around 8 or 9 PM. We would definitely end up at an open mic or a chill spot with music, there’s not one particular place. I love to go out in the town and explore events at random, and most of my friends do too. I love places where everyone is super inviting and they aren’t afraid to dance. If no one is dancing, me and my best friend will be the only one’s dancing without a care. We will pop lock and drop it until everyone joins… or if they don’t we’ll just enjoy our own energy together while they stare. What I really love is going to an event and then randomly getting invited to go somewhere else, like a pop-up after party. Every night would be different though, maybe go to a house party one night, meditate together and just vibe to music for hours, or have a game night. It’s all about balance. Either way if we are going out, we likely won’t get back home until 5 am…or 6.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Oh boy! There’s a few people I feel that have helped me to push myself and see my full potential. My brother, Jason, for sure. Michael Betzner has really helped me regain my confidence recently, Antonio Bailey, he’s always down for my crazy ideas. Nelisa Norman is someone that I work super well with for photoshoot ideas as well. Andrew Simmons really pushes me in the studio as a singer, Joose Lord doesn’t know this but he’s the reason I pushed myself to really jump into creative direction and not to dismiss my weird ideas. Toni Contini is always helping me through my phases of over thinking, hyping me up, and showing the biggest amounts of support possible. Aura makes me realize my potential within my musical sound and we’re always honest with each other regarding if something is actually good or not, which is rare to find! I can’t think of everyone off of the top of my head but everyone that’s been patient with me through all my stages thus far, really have helped me immensely.
