We had the good fortune of connecting with Akshat Pradhan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Akshat, how do you think about risk?
The biggest risk I took in my life was to move to LA to become a musician.

As a musician/producer, I feel like it’s very easy to get boxed into certain styles or genres of music. One of the easiest things for musicians to do is to sound ‘good’ like everyone else.

The risk-taking for me starts when you start to explore new sonic themes and start adapting them as your own. To make unconventional decisions with your sounds and arrangements has been one of the most rewarding risks I’ve taken. It has brought me closer to not just like minded musicians but like minded people in general.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
LA-based New Delhi-raised artist, I started playing bass at a young age in school. This musical education path eventually led me to first Berklee, them eventually Musician’s Institute where I bloomed under the guidance of some great mentors such as George Lopez, Alexis Skljarevski and Joseph Caputo

Combining this bass playing advancement with formidable forays in to music production and composition, I am currently active as a founding member of the bands Pakshee, 5yndik8 (pronounced Syndicate) and Lifeform, I have also accomplished sessions with artists like Prabh Deep, Rashmeet Kaur, Pt. Bhajan Sapori, Tanya Nambiar and many more.

The most important thing i’ve learnt recently is adept adaptability to express various styles and feels across the musical spectrum. Along with notably unique original music creations.

It wasn’t easy to try to fit in but still try to be unique.
The way to overcome this challenge was to provide my skills and services for the broader creative world, in all of its various sectors.

I’m not any different from others for trying to be skilled at just more than one thing.
But be it playing bass, or producing a song for another artist, I also understand a time, place and most importantly the requirement for each skill. The one thing that i’m proud of, in my journey, is the experiences and development my ears have been through. I believe i’m a good listener (at least musically haha) and over the years have learnt much better as to what the musical requirement or the need in the particular situation is.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would like for them to experience the beaches as well as the mountains. A day in Malibu and maybe another at Big Bear or Joshua Tree.

I would surely want for them to experience the culture and food in Korea Town, maybe have some KBBQ.

I would take them for a show to the Baked Potato to watch some of the finest jazz musicians in the world and then go for a warehouse party somewhere in Downtown LA

And of course you have to go Universal and Hollywood to have a touristy day or two!
