We had the good fortune of connecting with Al Bowman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Al, why did you pursue a creative career?
I find peace in it. I love where my mind takes itself and the feeling of satisfaction I get when I complete a project.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have been a brand designer for my clothing brand, Affiliated Apparel Boutique for almost 5 years and a big and tall model for about 3 years. What sets me apart from others these days is my minimal and humble approach to design as well as dress. I believe the people and their style truly “make” the looks so I choose to empower them as well as myself when I get dressed. I began to attend fashion shows and various other events to build a community within the fashion space. I changed my entire approach to life for my passions. I had to let go of things that did not align with my goals/ ambitions to create a clear vision of what I wanted and how I wanted to create an avenue for myself. This path was not easy, especially within a saturated market but consistency and networking can take you a long way. I had to understand that support comes within various forms and it also may not come from those that you expect if from.

I want the world to know that creativity comes in all forms and one should not be judged for it. There is no right or wrong way. Creativity stems from feelings and experiences that we choose to personify and share with the world. There is beauty in everything but it takes a specific person to find it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A few of my favorite spots in the city are Livery Cigar Lounge, The Friends Table, and The Sip Room. They are black-owned businesses located in Downtown Fayetteville.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shout out Mallory Richardson and Crusade of Curves for always believing me and pushing me to step out of my comfort zone. I would also like to shout out a few of my close friends/ business associates Tiah Kellyce, Shamar Farley, and Aaron Williams for constantly hearing me out and helping execute my visions.
