We had the good fortune of connecting with Alan Breslauer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alan, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Catios or cat patios have been around for more than a decade. In fact, I built my first outdoor cat enclosure 14 years ago. That said, the idea of creating safe outdoor spaces for feline family members had not penetrated mainstream society. Then the Cat Daddy, Jackson Galaxy, popularized catios on his Animal Planet show, “My Cat From Hell.” Galaxy preached the need to expose cats to fresh air and sunshine while keeping them safe from predators, cars, and other dangers. Suddenly cat guardians everywhere wanted to provide safe environments for their furballs. The options, however, were generally limited to fancy cages or finding a general contractor willing to take on a project with limited knowledge and zero expertise. I launched Custom Catios more than three years ago to bridge that gap by designing and building (arguably) the best cat enclosures in the world. Now cat lovers around Los Angeles and Orange County can create amazing, artistic, cat Disneyland’s that keep their furry loved ones safe and stimulated.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Most of the catio industry consists of very talented carpenters or former general contractors working solo. However, Custom Catios is a five-man team. This enables us to take on more projects, bigger jobs, and get extremely creative. We are always pushing the envelope and offering new innovative solutions.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
Music at the Hollywood Bowl, Greek, Fonda, Wiltern, and the Troubadour. Daytime excursions to Venice Beach, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, and Hollywood. Dinner at Petit Trois, Jon & Vinny’s, and Scratch Bar. Drinks at Augustine Wine Bar, Boneyard Bistro, and Twisted Oak (in Aguora Hills).
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Appearing on Jackson Galaxy’s television show, “Cat vs. Dog” was extremely educational and gave Custom Catios instant credibility. Thank you, Jackson! My righthand man, Artin Arefian, has been with me for two years and is vital to everything we do. Luis (the “artist”) and Henry (the “wizard”) are indispensable to turning my designs into stunning works of art. Finally, the worldwide catio builder community – including Cynthia Chomos, Catio Bob, The Cat Carpenter, John Creviston, Don & Yvette of Hellas Pet Enclosures, John Kuepper, Jennifer and Jonathan Elwing, Casey Jimerson, Bob Powell, David Carnaghe, and Cat Man Dan – have been so welcoming and ridiculously generous sharing best practices.
