Meet Alan Pekrul | Musician, Producer, Business Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Alan Pekrul and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alan, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
As a musician, starting a business had never really been at the forefront of my mind until recently. I started playing the drums at a young age, but it wasn’t until I branched out and learned other instruments that I realized that the sky was the limit and I could make full productions. As the years have gone on, my obsession with creating great material has grown. Now that I’ve gotten to the point of being confident in my skills as a musician, producer, and engineer, it was a no-brainer to create a business to allow others to create great art with me.

What should our readers know about your business?
Owning a business is certainly not the easiest thing on earth. There are a lot of steps involved, and it can be a strenuous process. However, because I have had so much experience producing and recording music, I am confident enough in my skills to where others can benefit greatly from what I have to offer.
A guitar teacher and alumnus of my college, Eric Davis, gave a speech to my class about how to make money in the music industry. One thing that stuck out to me from his speech was how he explained running a business as “solving other people’s problems in exchange for money.” This rang a bell in my mind, and I thought, “Huh, I could record and produce people’s music for cheaper than a professional studio and support my dreams of having a career in music.”
I enjoy my job and find that it’s very fulfilling to help other artists achieve their dreams. I’m so glad I get to share my space with so many talented people.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
LA truly is like no other place in the world. It’s so full of dreamers, and I love that about the city. Most of my favorite spots are in Hollywood. I love to go to Amoeba Records with my friends and check out all the spots along the Hollywood strip. Another great spot is the Observatory. The sunsets from that place are unreal.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many brilliant artists who have inspired my journey and led me to becoming a musician. I love the saying, “You are your influences,” because it could not be more true.
First off, my dad is a guitar player, and he is a foundational part of why I became a musician. Throughout his life, he has collected a multitude of musical instruments and gear that I have been fortunate enough to use and experiment with.
From kindergarten to fifth grade, I went to a school of the arts called M.A.T.E.S., and my elementary school music teacher, Frank LaGuardia, was and still is a major inspiration. His positive attitude, work ethic, and passion for his job made me love music and the arts. I wouldn’t be where I am today without him.
Another incredible influence is my sister, Gracie. She is a fellow musician and artist extraordinaire. We took piano lessons together from a young age and have always shared similar musical interests and listened to the same artists. She taught me how to play the guitar, and her effortless skill and incredible voice have always inspired me. When we create art together, it is like nothing else I’ve experienced.
As far as artists go, my absolute favorites are Tame Impala, Parcels, Foster The People, Roosevelt, Szymon, America, Slum Sociable, and STRFKR.
I love a good disco drum break; I usually either want to listen to something that makes me want to dance, or something that moves me.
