We had the good fortune of connecting with David Clayton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi David, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
It was always a dream of mine to start something of my own. After a number of years as a designer, followed by art director and then creative director, beginning a new chapter by opening a studio just felt like the next logical step.
What that looked like constantly evolved and U-turned based upon my experiences in the entertainment industry, each iteration having a different set up or model. But Plucky was not born out any particular plan… more like she was born out of necessity.
While taking some time off after exiting a previous position, my partner (Jeff Marks) and I were just beginning to kick the tires on what starting our own shop would entail. Then the phone rang. Not once, but a number of times and before we knew it, we were creating pitch decks, storyboards & animation from my garage in North Hollywood (to the chagrins of my wife, as this was her office, not ours).
Within a month or two, we moved into our first office and Plucky had become a reality.
What should our readers know about your business?
Over the years I have “killed myself” staying late in an effort to meet the expectations I’ve placed on myself or in an attempt to satisfy others.
I promised myself that I would not do so again until I owned my own business… but in doing so, I have realized that though what we do is important, we’re not saving lives, and thus have been able to strike a balance between work life and family life. This is paramount to our success, if you are happy out in the world, you will bring your very best to the project at hand.
Plucky is proud that our clients trust us and see us as creative partners. As we welcome a director to the creative journey we are embarking upon, we bring a variety of creative conceptual options, so that the client feels like they can let us do our job, and thus allow them to focus on the other 98 minutes of the film that they are making.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Love this, let’s do it (not in one day, unless you’re nuts, but it may read that way)…
Chelsea v anyone at The Kings Head pub, pint a must, blood pudding optional
A little culture of the Venice Boardwalk, sun, sand, sea and street art (the Venice Art Walk is rad, calendar dependent)
Breakfast at Hank’s Bagels in Toluca Lake, they don’t mess around
Mini Golf at Castle Park, a simple pleasure while feeling like I’m starring in a movie
Brunch overlooking the whole Valley at Castaways, it’s pretty spectacular (and so are their Bloody Mary’s)
Hike in Griffith Park, lovely way to see the city
Pose next to James Dean at Griffith Park Observatory
Photo op with the Real Chewbacca and his friends on Hollywood Boulevard’s Walk of Fame
Lunch and a cheeky pint at The Cat & Fiddle (Hollywood’s finest for over 30 years)
Take in a movie at the World Famous Cinerama Dome, there’s nothing like it
The La Brea Tar Pits / LACMA, something of interest for one & all
Marvel at the Disney Concert Hall on the way to The Broad, modern art
An island cocktail at Tiki Ti, watch out for the Toro, and his friend!
Dinner & live music at The Smoke House, you never know who you may see
Nightcap at The Rendition Room, they don’t mess around
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
An incredible question…. with so many people that have offered advice and pointed me in the right direction over the years… both as a professional and as a human being, it is hard to pick just one. But my father has without a doubt been a guiding light throughout my life, and if he felt that he couldn’t assist, he would find someone who could, damn it!
I am passionate about paying it forward, the mentorship i have had since day 1 is not taken for granted. With every portfolio review, grad show and intern that comes through our doors, I offer thoughts and advice, but also let them know that I am here to be called on in the future if & when they may need.
I sincerely believe I would not be the man that I am, or where I am, if not for the pearls of wisdom offered to me by family & friends, professors & professionals.
