We had the good fortune of connecting with Alberto Accettulli and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alberto, how do you think about risk?
As you can tell from my name I’m from Italy, born and raised. Talking about risks, I think I took my chance when I decided to leave my country and move to the other side of the world, starting from scratch with no connection or friends whatsoever. I was living a quite comfortable life in Milan, had two companies, clients, friends and family. Despite that I was not happy. Sometimes you have business, sometimes you have less and you just keep up with it. I couldn’t deal with that and Italy is such a small market compared to others around the world. At some point I thought that the only way to improve would be to get out of my little Truman Show life and start from square one on the other side of the world. Six months later I moved to South East Asia, an amazing emerging, market! and from there to the USA, from the USA back and forth with my beloved Asia. And so on. In hindsight, I would never change my mind about the decision to leave. If you want to grow, you have to feel the fear, you have to take risks! This is just my modest opinion…at the beginning it’ s scary but gets a bit less terrifying each day.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I specialize in automotive and motorcycles advertising films but I have long term goals to transitions into creating tv shows and movies in the future. Such a tough task! Getting into the motorcycle business has been relatively easy, considering my mountain bike background. One day, during a sport event, I met a freestyle motocross champion (Alvaro) and I gave him a dvd with my bike videos to promote myself as a filmmaker. The next day Alvaro called me asked me If I wanted to leave in a week for California to make a freestyle documentary with him and other riders. A month hanging around in Southern California! A week later I was on the plane. From there I started to work with Ducati and that opened my career in the business, allowing me to work with Honda, Yamaha, Tvs and Hero in Asia. Another time, my motorcycle reel was suitable for a Toyota car film and I got hired. That one has been my first car commercial, the second one was for Jeep and so on. One job leads to another. In reference to my brand, I just want my clients to feel my full dedication, passion and creativity. I’m always up to think outside the box! For me, there are no 9-5 office hours, the kitchen is always open!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would certainly take a drive through the desert!.. I do love the Anza Borrego State Park so it would be my first choice. On the way to Borrego Springs, we would stop in Temecula Old Town, which is a little hidden gem not to far from LA. From Anza Borrego we would be driving to Salton Sea and check out all the little lake town such as Bombay Beach and Salton City. They are incredible locations and we can’t miss them. From there we would be driving to Joshua Tree, lodging at my friend’s place, the Desert Yacht Club. An amazing place owned by a fellow Italian guy, another hidden gem gone in the desert. This is my favorite weekend trip! In Los Angeles, I like to show my friends my favorite spots, places like Larchmont and Franklin Village, where you can see writers working on a scripts and actors studying their lines at the coffee shop. When I’m by myself, I love to just drive around the city and get lost in the all the different neighborhoods.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I got into this business because of my mountain biking background. I used to be a professional mountain bike rider and used to watch hundreds of mountain bike, bmx, moto cross and skateboarding videos. So I got inspired by all of them. When I quit my career and I was just playing around with an amateur camera, brands such as Red Bull, Nike and Ducati gave me a chance to make videos of their athletes and to cover their sports events. So I owe these companies and the people behind them (Elisabetta, Carmen, Isabella and Patrizia) my gratitude and for the start of my career in this industry. And then, one day, a friend of friend introduced me to a director’s agent and she (Mary) helped me to become a director. I got my first project in Moscow, Russia and another one right after in Dubai. Since then I kept traveling non-stop. Traveling from location to location is my favorite aspect of the business!
