We had the good fortune of connecting with Alec Sartain – Smartalec/Helsing and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alec Sartain -, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Having the courage to try what you never thought you could do, seems to be a major key for attaining internal success/happiness. We all fail, but we can also fail forward – meaning it leads us to the next challenge.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
All of this started from me making beats. I’ve always had a deep love for music and wanted to start my own record label, so I then began learning audio engineering and now I’m onto being a solo artist and business owner which just adds more variables but it’s a part of evolving.
I’ve always felt that I was never good enough to perform vocals, and could never write a song to save my life.
Things can happen in life that push you over the edge to where you don’t have the capacity to care about what others think, and that pushed me to create my own solo songs. Even if people didn’t like my material, I was doing it for me.
This is the story of how a beatmaker comes producer – comes to be an artist. As humans we should never be mentally imprisoned thinking we’re only one thing in this life. It’s also the art of letting go of who you thought you were.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Kansas City is a great place to soak in for a vacation if you don’t mind not having a beach. I enjoy more of the simpler things like parks and trails rather than bars or clubs, even though we have a Power & Light district with plenty of that. You have to get barbecue while here, Q39 or Jacks Stack is my favorite. There’s some really interesting places here like Nelson Atkins museum, amusement parks like Worlds of Fun/Oceans of Fun. There’s also a lot of historic locations that have been here since the 1800’s when Missouri was first formed.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to King Kihei for mentoring me throughout my entire music career (since I was 16) & Robert Rebeck for all his efforts playing guitar and helping mix & master my songs!
