We had the good fortune of connecting with Alex Roma and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alex, how do you think about risk?
Without taking risks and diving into the unknown, I would not be where I am today with my music. Since the moment I stepped out on a stage for the first time, almost every move that I have made involves risk. Writing songs is already something that is not easy, but sharing them opens up a whole new level of vulnerability. I think the vulnerability is what makes art and music so special though. It allows someone else to relate to your story, but in their own way through their own life experiences. It’s never easy to share personal experiences. There is a constant voice in my head that says, “What if people don’t like this” or “What if someone thinks that this is stupid?” It takes a lot to overcome that voice, but at the end of the day, sharing my music with the world is what I love.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I make alternative/dream pop music. It took a long time to figure out what direction I wanted to go in sonically, but I finally have a more narrow idea. I’m still working on finding my true voice and sound, but I am getting closer to that every day. I actually just passed 1,000 followers on Spotify this week. It’s really amazing to see that so many new people are connecting with my new music. It was not easy to get to this point though. I’ve learned that numbers like that are never enough though. Now that I’m at 1,000 followers, I want to achieve my next goal of 5,000 followers. And I know once I hit that goal, I’ll want to move right on to the next one. I’m trying to learn to appreciate the moment and where I’m at now though so I don’t take it for granted. I want the world to know that this is just the beginning, and I can’t wait to continue sharing my stories through my music.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Being in Boston means that there is lots of great culture, art, and history. It also means that we have lots of great food – especially sushi. I would definitely recommend Oga’s, which is my favorite sushi restaurant in the entire world. I’d also try to hit all of my favorite live music venues. For someone who has never been to Boston, going to Quincy Market in the Summer is always a fun experience, as well as walking around the North End.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Without the support and encouragement of my friends and family, I would not be where I am today. I would just have 100s of unreleased songs sitting on my computer. My parents have been supportive of my music since day 1. I acknowledge that and recognize that privilege. They have supported me to continue working on my music while also working my 9-5. I also think that my best friend, Ben, deserves a massive shoutout. He has always been honest with me about my music. It’s great to have friends that always hype you up and say “That sounds great!” – Ben isn’t like that though. He’ll tell me if he thinks I can sound better on a song or write better lyrics. I’m thankful for his honesty, and that’s how I know he is like a brother, not just a friend. Also, my girlfriend pushes me to not only be a better musician each day, but also a better human being. I’m incredibly grateful for her love and support. Taking on the world together is my favorite thing.

Lastly, the people who listen to my music deserve a massive shoutout. Without them, I would not be where I’m at today, and I’m so grateful for anyone who hits play!
