We had the good fortune of connecting with Alex Wakim and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alex, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most?
A genuine desire for connection is one value that matters a ton to me. That’s what excites me most about working on films, is that a huge point of the project/process is to connect with an audience: and my role in that, connecting to that audience’s subconscious via the director’s vision, is invigorating. I think connection and empathy is what can save us from the common temptations that plague the industry. Empathy is another value that is incredibly important to me.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My music is a mixture of my past experiences, as well as what a collaborator is looking for. Jazz, Puccini, Ravel, Bill Evans, Byzantine Chant, Michel Legrand, and more:) What makes me unique is my ability to combine all of these delectable influences into a film score that works perfectly for the film at hand.

I’m most excited about the neat collaborations I’ve gotten to be a part of. A documentary I wrote music for, Glen Eden, is being presented at the National Portrait Gallery for 2022-2023, and touring for the following year. I’ve also had films in the RAINDANCE Film Festival, and beyond, as well as work on Sony’s Horizon Forbidden West with Oleksa Lozowchuk. The shows I’ve put on myself, including my theatrical concert, Dust and Ions, as well as my musical, An American in Beirut, were huge successes, and were integral in developing my system and artistic voice.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
In NYC, I’d say to really enjoy the parks and bodegas. Yes you should go to one or two of the famous restaurants, but nothing feels more like NYC than walking thru Central Park, or Inwood (which I highly recommend), and grabbing some food at a local bodega. Also a stop to the Met Cloisters is necessary. Dumbo is another area I like a lot.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Huge thanks to my family (Mimi/Tony/etc) for their constant support, to the church, particularly St. Nicholas Orthodox Cathedral in Brooklyn, as well as to Juan and Mollina, the anchors to my NY life. And of course NYU and all the mentors, etc:)
