We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexandra Corin Johnston and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alexandra Corin, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk has been the thing in my life that has propelled me forward. I moved to LA with only a carry on of clothing and no plan, 10 years later I would still take that risk over and over again. My husband and I self financed two indie features in two years… HIGHLY risky! But we have been rewarded more than two fold for that risk. To put it simply, over the last 10 years, the times I have played it safe, I haven’t gotten anywhere fast. The times I have been bold, I have reaped the greatest rewards. Book the flight, send the thousands of emails, take the class, make the movie… Just jump. You may not always land where you hoped you might, but you’ll always land on your feet.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have been acting my whole life, beginning with a starring role in “The Three Little Pigs”. Jokes aside, I caught the bug early and my passion for it has never strayed. I don’t think there is such thing as an easy path in a field as uncharted and as nuanced as the arts. Especially given the climate of the film industry over the last few years. I have been exceptionally lucky to be a part of shows like “American Playboy: The Hugh Hefner Story” & “Party of Five”, indie films including “The Big Day”, “Dead List”, “Dead Sexy”, & “Lethal Desire” (coming soon), and to have been a part of making indie films, “Shark Girl” & “Sleep Stalker” (coming soon). What I have learned along the way, is that the cavalry is not coming… it’s never going to be easy, every step forward will come with it’s own set of challenges, and no one is going to do that hard work for you. All you have to hang your hat on is you. Once I realized that, and accepted that, the fun in being an artist came back to me as if someone broke down a dam.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I have a few go to activities when guests are in town! A sample itinerary would probably look something like this: Start the day with a hike in Griffith Park, ending at the observatory (I could spend hours up there). Post hike, cruise over to Highland Park for a quick brunch at Highly Likely (the Mediterranean Eggs are excellent). From there, make your way down to Echo Park Lake and find a nice grassy spot for a coffee and a yap. After that, time to cross town to the west side. Sandwiches at Gjusta Bakery in Venice are a must, followed by a light beach walk (or lay) before the sun goes down. Dinner at Hama Sushi (Crispy tuna!!) followed by a BackDoor Comedy show hosted by Max Meisel – the most fun comedy party in Venice. If you’re not so lucky to be in town when a BackDoor Comedy show is happening, an indie movie at the Santa Monica Laemmle followed by a late night wine at Bodega is also a top tier evening in my book.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My Husband, Justin Shilton! The man who “yes, ands” with me harder than anyone, who pushes me a little further, is my biggest cheerleader, and is one hell of a writer & director.
