Meet Alexia Rubod: Transmedia Artist & Storyteller

We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexia Rubod and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexia, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
For an artist, taking risks is always part of the development process. It can mean trying a new technique, negotiating a rate, transitioning career or moving across the globe. It comes down to facing our fears and it’s going to look different for everyone. It’s often about putting ourselves “out there”, out in the world, out of our comfort zone. It can be about being seen and heard a whole new way, because what is an artist without an audience ? It is sometimes about taking a leap of faith with no guarantee on the other side. Every time we do something new, something unknown, our mind will perceive a risk. Creativity is also found in being scared, and doing it anyways. It is said that we are most rewarded when we allow ourselves to be most vulnerable. This has certainly been true for me.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is an ongoing and everchanging process. There is much to learn and much to explore. I love to jump from one technique to another, which is fascinating and challenging at the same time – as there are only twenty-four hours in one day. I chose this career for my love of high detail, character creation and storytelling. I spent the past six years working as a 3D artist, learning both about artistic and technical skills, as well as learning how to have a healthy work-life balance. I like to be alone in front of a screen or scripting ideas on paper, just as much as I enjoy engaging with the world or having my hands covered in clay. I think that a good working artist is also someone who can manage and integrate in its work all the different aspects of life. Today, the meaning and mindfulness behind the activity that will be allocated most of my time are of the utmost importance. I think that the most heartfelt creations require a certain level of alignment.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
What made me fall in love with Southern California is the access to nature. I would take them camping in Big Sur, surfing in Point Dume, Malibu, stargazing in Joshua tree, skiing in Big Bear, hiking in Topanga Canyon, picnicking at Echo Park Lake and observing the sunset at Elysian Park. I would take them on a stroll on Sunset Boulevard on, say, a Saturday morning. We would stop at the farmer’s market in Silverlake, get some brunch at Cliff’s Edge and (why not !) a massage at The Now. We would have an ice-cream at Salt & Straw in the Arts District, walk around the craft shops, have dinner at Kushi Shabu in Little Tokyo and later meet friends for drinks at Black Cat.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
So many ! Inspiration and support have a domino effect. I think the greatest feeling is when you’re finally in a position to offer some help, knowing all the help you’ve received to get there. I like to see it as a web lifting everybody up at the same time. We are all part of the same chain of action. I would like to start with my family of course. My parents Patricia and Philippe, along with my older brother Aurelien, my stepmom Lacry, and all my beloved cousins, deserve the biggest credit for where I am – and who I am – today. Then my teachers and classmates at MOPA, for these amazing five years of studying animation and storytelling South of France. All the people and organizations involved somehow in my US work visa process (most grateful for this one) : Liz Profumo, Sebastien Chort, Julien Deparis, Jeff Tucker, Nathalie Vancauwenberghe, Blur Studio and Wonder Dynamics. And I of course owe so much to the community of kind souls and talented people around me, who keep me on my path, support and inspire me everyday : Clara Badulescu, Rebecca Abraham, James Lees, Aaron Kaskowitz, Jennifer Bobe, Damien Steck, John Jester, Felix Faidherbe, Tuan Lee, Annuka Bathija, Sara Guizani, Florianne Sordet and Rosa Jorimann to name just a few.
