We had the good fortune of connecting with Ali Aloulou and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ali, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk has been and still is a major part of my life decisions. My move to Paris, Dubai and Los Angeles from Tunisia were all risky. I moved to all these cities without even visiting them, it was an intuition and I was right about my choices. All these steps had a risk factor in them, in very different ways. I guess the biggest risk to date was to put on the side a successful and stable career as Architect and Interior Designer and focus on my actual dream and goal that is music. Doing it at an early age is easier than when you’re established in a field and flip the whole professional direction.
Risk is necessary for dreamers, you can’t achieve much without it, unless you start from a very privileged point. I encourage everybody to take risks to try and reach their goals but to be strategic about it, study all the different scenarios and be ready for them before taking that life changing decision.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
In my music, whether it’s production or live, I always try to make it culturally relevant to me, the artist I work with or the place I perform in. I take pride on making the Arab sounds more accessible to the rest of the world and make people discover where I’m from, through music, I almost feel like it’s a responsibility. I think that different cultures fought for their visibility in the art and culture space, and I want to be one of the facilitators for making my part of the world have a stronger voice.

To get to where I am today, it was a pretty long and hard journey, but necessary, it couldn’t be any different for me. I stayed focused, embraced my own reality and made it work with an unreasonable faith in myself and the future. I believe that it’s never too late for certain things, of course you have to be realistic, but not too much. I’m aware that the internet is telling people that everything is possible and everybody is so special, I don’t believe that, but I believe once you master your craft, you put the necessary work and then have the validation and cosign from certain people from your industry, you’re good to go.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
That’s a tricky one for me haha! I’m really not the best (yet) at giving any recommendations simply because I moved literally few months before Covid-19 stroke. So I didn’t have the opportunity to see much.

I would go check what concerts, events and exhibitions are happening, that’s for sure. I would take them to some of the nature spots around (Solstice Canyon in Malibu, Joshua Tree, 29 Palms, Laguna Beach…). Sorry, you’re not getting any hidden gems reading this! I have friends that I can call for recommendations though.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
To start from the very beginning, I would love to thank my cousin Omar Aloulou, a music composer specialized in films. He rooted in me my love for music since childhood and he’s a long time collaborator, we were part of bands together and had a producing duo, he creatively has been a huge influence. After that, I would like to give a huge shoutout to DJ Mocity, who believed in me and gave me my first real DJ opportunity in Dubai, followed by a record deal. Once I moved to LA, I built my team and now I’m managed by Crossovr and legally represented by The Dublin Firm. I’m looking forward for what’ about to happen next and our collaborations together. Throughout this whole journey, I always had my mixing and mastering mentor, Samir Hamzi, he’s truly a man behind the scene based in Paris and he’s majorly responsible of the quality of my sound. Of course, I would like to thank every single person that supports my music and come to my shows, every single brand that endorsed me and media that expressed interested in me (Shoutout Voyage LA).
