We had the good fortune of connecting with Alicia Paley and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alicia, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My design focus has always been sustainability. I wanted to be able to provide all my clients with eco-friendly options that wouldn’t sacrifice on style or quality. Having my own design studio enabled me to do this. I’ve developed a list of go to local trades and vendors that help me provide my clients with the very best of sustainable design solutions, products and services.

What should our readers know about your business?
Since day one, I have made the environment the focus of my design business. This is an important element of what sets me apart from the other designers in my area. I am very aware that building practices and consumerism can have a detrimental impact to the environment. When working on a remodel, for example, I will always suggest that the client donate their old cabinets, if they are in good shape. New cabinetry is made with FSC wood. Non toxic stains and paints are used. And we reuse as much as we can. Often times, even with a full remodel, there will be items that can be reused. When I first began my design business, this was a bit of a challenge since the financial cost of environmentally friendly items was significantly more than conventional items. There was also less of a selection. But today, many vendors have developed lines that are environmentally friendly and the prices are much more comparable. That certainly has made my job a lot easier!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
One of the things I love most about Southern California is its natural beauty! Although during this pandemic when we’re not really having visitors or frequenting restaurants, we can still take advantage of spending time outdoors hiking and strolling along beaches. I look forward to the time when we can once again gather with family and friends over long meals and good wine. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am part of a wonderful group of interior designers in the Conejo Valley aptly named, Conejo Association of Professional Interior Designers, or CAPID for short. I’ve been a member of the group for eight years and was the president for the past two years. Besides being able to share resources with other members, the group has also helped me expand my knowledge of many design related topics. It’s really a great, supportive group that I’m proud to be a member of.
