We had the good fortune of connecting with Alisa Pospekhova and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alisa, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Fear of risk and fear of failure is what commonly holds people back from pursing their passions and entrepreneurial ideas, but at one point, a friend of mine mentioned that I was really taking a “bet on myself” and for some reason that thinking really stuck with me and that is how I continue to think about driving and growing my business.

When you stop thinking of risk as a factor of some external forces that are either helping or not helping you succeed and you start thinking about it in terms of belief in yourself and your own abilities to effect the outcome, it empowers you take on the unknown in a much more confident and calculated manner.

Starting a business was definitely scary in terms of capital investment and every single day presents challenges, which I am constantly having to figure out how to solve, but being an entrepreneur is also the most excited and energetic I’ve ever felt. I am able to be creative and strategic without limits and I am able to shape and deliver products that positively impact other people’s lives – at the end of the day both of those continue to push me to take on the risk of driving my business further.

What should our readers know about your business?
About a year ago I launched Kindroot – a self-funded herbal supplement company focused on making supplements fun, convenient and less intimidating. I grew up with immune issues, so getting sick was pretty common for me. As an adult with a stressful career, I really focused on building up my resilience and I wanted to do it the natural way. I found that most supplements on the market were either boring or bothersome to take and powders and liquids were super inconvenient. At the same time, I kept hearing from my friends how they didn’t know what to choose from a plethora of options on the shelves. This promoted me to create our magical little lozenges that combine nurturing functional ingredients with aromatherapy inspired flavors for a full-body experience. I was really focused on bringing the best product to market and having full creative and strategic vision, so the company is fully owned by me, but that also means that our resources are limited and I have to constantly be creative while wearing multiple hats. It is always challenging, but getting positive feedback from our customers always motivates me to continue pushing through.
I have an ambitious vision for the company, but for now I am focused on taking it one day and one step at a time.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I was born in Latvia, grew up in Michigan, spent time in Germany, but I’ve never felt more at home than in Los Angeles – I think the laid back wellness focused culture really connects with me.

Starting your day the right way is important, so I suggest a yummy yoga class at Yoga MB in Manhattan Beach, or if you want something less physical, head to Unplug meditation in Santa Monica – it will really change the way you float through your day.
From there head north to Venice and check out Erewhon. When people come to LA, the are like “Are you really going to take us to a grocery store?”, but at the end of it they all comment how they wish they had one where they live – it truly has the best products, including Kindroot Adaptogems! Not too far from there in Moon Juice, which is always amazing for a smoothie.
Shape House in Santa Monica is another one of my favorite places – it is a sweat lodge with private rooms, which helps detox and relax. Whenever I go there, I always have the best sleep.

You can’t go wrong with dinner at Kazunori for the freshest hand rolls, if you still have some juice in you, head out to Moonshadows in Malibu for a sunset drink. The ocean salt air is always so relaxing.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’ve been fortunate to work with and for some amazing people, who saw potential in me and mentored me along the way. One of them, Jan Hall, current CEO of Om Mushroom Superfood was VP of Marketing at POM Wonderful when I was just starting out in my career – not only was she an incredibly strong yet kind leader who always ensured to develop her employees, but it was also inspiring to watch a strong female role model continue to be successful in her field.
