Meet Alissa Laurie | Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Alissa Laurie and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alissa, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my own business was knowing that risk comes with reward and in the moments you feel like you aren’t being rewarded you’re probably learning something very important and with that comes the growth. Funny enough starting my own business happened on it’s own. Once I got my internship in collage and saw the working world of photography I knew I had to be a part of it. I started taking free photo gigs to get my name out there and then as I started to build a portfolio it became easier to gain clients that trusted me and my work. Through word of mouth I was then able to go into photography full time and make It my own business.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My photography is something I’ve always been proud of because it brings me a sense of comfort knowing that there are endless possibilities to grow in the field. I feel as though the thing that sets me a part from other photographers is that when I’m photographing I always have a story playing in my mind of what the images represent. One difficult aspect of photography is making your subject feel comfortable in front of a lens, but once I introduced the aspect of story telling through the images it created a space that allowed the subject to play a part which allowed them to get into a character rather then just having to figure out on their own how they should be moving and posing for the camera.
In that same breath, one of the most beautiful and hard things about photography as a career is that you’re forced to grow and keep learning. The photo world is ever changing, whether it be new cameras and programs being brought in, or new lighting techniques that need to be learned. Knowing this taught me one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned along the way and that’s to keep learning and keep pushing to create even if you feel like your work isn’t getting the recognition it deserves because it’s a much scary place to stay exactly where you are with that mindset. The recognition from others will come, but the belief in yourself has to come first.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to to dedicate this to my family and friends, I am surrounded by the most supportive group of people that believe in me more then I believe in myself sometimes and that is the greatest thing I could ask for and I am thankful for them everyday.
