We had the good fortune of connecting with Aliza Brugger and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Aliza, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factors behind my success as a filmmaker are my scrappy, determined approach to filmmaking and my need to create connection between my characters, the people I work with and the audience I make films for. I care a lot for humanity, and this has been the driving force behind my motivation and focus. My commitment to my craft and the people involved is what fuels my obsession with filmmaking and what gives my work what I hope to be raw authenticity.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a filmmaker who focuses on exploring class, queerness, family dysfunction, and the subconscious. I’m particularly proud of my ability to connect audiences to characters in ways that force them to empathize. I’m known for building worlds that are rich and unfamiliar to viewers, and for visualizing the subconscious in a way that feels authentic and visually interesting.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d take my guests to Quarters KBBQ, Leo’s Taco Truck and the little place on the corner of my block that sells homemade Mexican food. We’d probably do a Griffith Park hike, hit up a couple rooftop bars, maybe go dancing. If they’re in town on a Tuesday, I’d take them to my beach volleyball league in Santa Monica. (Go Topo Chicos!)

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to give a shout out to my cinematographer, Andrés Solórzano. We first worked together in 2019 on my short film “Ain’t No Mercy for Rabbits.” It was a crazy outdoor shoot with a lot of factors working against us, but he gave his full self to the project, and it turned out great. That little short set the tone for the rest of our working relationship, and we now collaborate on every project we manage to get our hands on. He’s a resourceful expert who does everything he can to serve the story.
