We had the good fortune of connecting with Aliza Brugger and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Aliza, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
Your goodness must have some edge to it, else it is none. – Ralph Waldo Emerson

To feel safe and accepted in rural Nebraska where I was raised, I felt like I had to shrink myself to meet the expectations of my conservative, religious environment. I had to work really hard to fully embrace my identity as a queer and non-binary artist. But then, years later in NYC, after my first class at Columbia University in the MFA film program, I felt the familiar weight of non-belonging as a first-generation college student, and to fully take advantage of the program, I had to fight my imposter’s syndrome to make space for myself in the classroom. Now, in Los Angeles, I’m doing the same in an unforgiving industry. To me, Emerson’s quote means doing good doesn’t mean being small, and telling urgent, authentic, celebratory stories about my community keeps me motivated and inspired.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am an award-winning screenwriter / director  originally from Nebraska. I got my MFA in screenwriting/directing from Columbia University, and I now live and work in Los Angeles/New York. I am most fulfilled with my work when I’m exploring class, queerness, family, nature and the subconscious. My goal as a filmmaker is to create empathy and connection.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’d take my guests to Quarters KBBQ,  Leo’s Taco Truck and the little place on the corner of my block that sells homemade Mexican food. We’d probably do a Griffith Park hike, hit up a couple rooftop bars, maybe go dancing. If they’re in town on a Tuesday, I’d take them to my beach volleyball league in Santa Monica. (Go Topo Chicos!)

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

Laura, my sister, my ride or die b*tch. I wouldn’t be where I am without her support as a human or artist.
