We had the good fortune of connecting with Allison Cuevas and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Allison, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Last spring my husband Thomas Ramirez and I decided to embark on a new venture of owning a business together. I wanted my hometown of Covina to be a fun, cool placed like Claremont or Pasadena. We envisioned something local in Covina since there’s been a lack of alternative spaces in the area; a space where fashion, art and culture would merge to reflect the kind of lifestyle that we live and love, and ultimately wanted to share with the neighborhood. That’s how our boutique, Sunday Sol, was born! The name Sunday Sol is an homage to my maternal grandfather, Domingo, which translates to Sunday in Spanish. My grandfather retired in Covina. The name Sol comes from one of my 3 sons. His name is Santiago SOL and so I combined my grandfathers name and my son.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Thomas and I are entrepreneurs but without any experience in retail. He is a an attorney. I am a Dental Hygienist. We had to learn everything quickly. I’m the art director, buyer and wear many other hats. The biggest challenge so far include the transformation of the store to get it shop ready; but also stacking my team and finding a rhythm for scheduling on-site support. We completely remodeled the space from scratch with the help of my family. We removed the ceiling and exposed the beams of the 1900’s original knob and tube electrical work. We painted inside and out, put up new lighting, had custom signage built and installed and much more! Then styling the store and filling it with inventory we were excited to sell was fun, but a huge labor of love that we did with three small children at our feet, day in and out.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Our downtown area is very unique. It was established in the early 1900s and has kept is classic charm. We would start our day but getting coffee at this cute coffee shop called: rad coffee. There many restaurants to choose from but I personally love Giovanni’s for their classic Italian cuisine and cocktails. Then we would walkover to our SHOP- SUNDAY SOL for some fun shopping.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband Thomas is a well establish attorney and an amazing father but he has been the biggest help in this whole process. When I found a storefront in the perfect part of downtown Covina. He rolled up our sleeves and renovated the store to reflect a beautiful aesthetic and place that sells the latest locally made fashion, carries goods by local makers, has great energy and gives you that Sunday fun day feeling when you shop.
