We had the good fortune of connecting with A’Lores C. Norris and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi A’Lores C., have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Balancing Work, and family was one of the most difficult things for me at first. I was a stay at home mom for 11 years so when i stepped out on my own and opened my own cosmetic store things started to spiral out of control at home and at work. I would forget about my kids football games, and activities because my mind was so focused on the store, or I would forget about appointments at the store because I was so worried about kids. The days I had off I really wasn’t off because I was still on the phone arranging appointments or would still end up at the store getting in last minute appointments. Eventually that stressed me out to the point where I was completely burned out. I started to schedule days I was at work and when I was off I would really stick to that. I also started to schedule me some Me DAYS just to reboot and relax. I had to find a way to run the business, manage my family and take care of myself. Organization is a great way to balance work and family.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started my journey in art at a very late age. In college I didn’t even wear makeup. I didn’t start wearing makeup until I was older living in Germany while my husband was deployed. I was living in a Germany with 2 toddlers and a new born and I needed something to do to get my mind off dirty diapers and screaming toddlers and makeup did that for me. I would go to the makeup counter on base and play in their foundations buy some makeup goodies here and there come home, put the boys to bed by 8:30pm and do my face! It was so much fun for me!! I would post pictures on Facebook and next thing I know alot of the wives that lived in Germany with me wanted me to do their makeup for our Military Balls, and events! I really wasn’t that good then but that’s where it all begin . From there I decided that I wanted to take it serious so when we moved from Germany back to the to states I went back to school for Studio Arts. I learned all about colors, tones, shades, my professors had me in there painting self portraits, and it really shaped the artist I am today. Studio Arts gave me the upper hand on makeup and how I could use my studio arts knowledge and pair that with makeup. I also used my Studio Arts knowledge to began my own cosmetic line. That was the best thing I could have ever done. It set my cosmetic line apart because I know exactly what shade goes with what skin tone and I took full advantage of that knowledge while creating my brand and my cosmetic line.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh! I’m such a laid back girl but if I had a best friend visiting I would definitely take her downtown Greenville for some shopping, and food & that night we would have to visit the jazz club that has the best music and nightlife in Greenville!
