We had the good fortune of connecting with Miho Watanabe and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Miho, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Work life balance when we started our businesses 4 years ago was almost non-existent. We were both hustling with multiple sources of work/income, and to no surprise both our health and relationship took a toll. But when it came down to confronting ourselves, each other, and our core values, we knew we wanted to commit to this entrepreneurship endeavor, as well as support each other in living our best lives while in this pursuit. With a lot of patience, perseverance and communication, after the first 2 years, we started to find some more balance in our work lives. Each year it gets a little better, as work life balance is still one of our biggest priorities. But as we continue to go through growing pains at the moment, we are still struggling to fine tune it. It’s definitely something we will never take for granted.

What should our readers know about your business?
We currently have two brands under our business, and are in the midst of creating more brands as well as expanding our offerings in the original two. baceae offers cannabis hemp products which includes organic/vegan/fair trade confections, topicals and tinctures, While Vana Tisanes offers a wide range of organic/fair trade herbal tea blends that are meant to naturally enhance certain functions of the body or mind. In both brands, we offer the highest quality of ingredients and care into making all the products. Everything is handmade, and it’s taken a lot of time to develop. To say the least, building out each product line was not easy, especially the specific products we chose. There’s just a lot of hurdles and red tape we constantly have to maneuver around. Again, patience and perseverance, as well as the ability to adapt quickly is how we think we’ve made it this far. Managing the stress and the fear/discomfort of the unknown though, is probably the biggest lesson we’ve learned along the way. Every moment brings a unique set of circumstances, but it’s important to stay calm and collected to handle what comes your way, then to be afraid all the time.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well, we are here in Cambria, CA, also known as the Central Coast. I’d say, bring your hiking shoes and sandals, because there’s a lot of trails and beaches to explore. Harmony Headlands, San Simeon Cove, and Montana De Oro to name just a few. If you are hungry and vegan, go to Soto’s True Earth in Cambria for a variety of healthy food/drink options, or Sunshine in Morro Bay. Or if you are not vegan and just like big burgers/sandwiches and want to sit outside and dine, Cafe on Bridge in Cambria. Dinner, we always recommend Robins or Indigo Moon. Since we are adjacent to wine country, there are A LOT of wineries to check out. We are also next to where the elephant seals migrate which is fun to check out, as well as just south of beautiful Big Sur.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Hands down, Soto’s True Earth. They have supported us and given us opportunities from the very beginning and we will be forever grateful for their generosity, openness and kindness to us. Each of the original owners have a special place in our hearts.
