We had the good fortune of connecting with Amanda Morton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Amanda, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I used to have a terrible work-life balance. When I was younger I focused heavily on work to my own detriment. Now that I focus on having that balance and keeping a sustainable pace I’m in a better place. Balance for me is having my needs met and fulfilling my creative duties. It requires being strict on boundaries, actual workable hours and so on but it allows me to have the time to relax and reengage with things that boost my creativity.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My work focuses on queer and gender narratives and my art is in a space that straddles gender expression. I love being able to create work with a distinct gender flair that celebrates queer identity. Research is an important part of my workflow. By using insights into historical periods, I find themes and details to make believable and engaging stories. This allows me to create unexpected but fitting details in my designs and stories. This skill is invaluable as I’ve been a research assistant for small studios and independent artists as well as a costume concept artist for a few short films.

I’ve had the opportunity to work on projects with women-centered narratives that featured super-inclusive and supportive working environments. It wasn’t easy even getting this far and it took me quite some time to find a community that aligns with my values but it was worth it. I really appreciate being able to work with people who focus on these types of narratives and promote inclusivity.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m a bit of a nerd so I’d definitely take them to see the various museums large and small! It’d be a fun few days going through the Natural History Museum, the Mystic Museum, the Autry, La Brea, the Norton Simon and so much more! I’d include visiting some small local used bookstores like the Open Book and the smaller metaphysical shops as well. I love visiting Wolf and Jackal during their events! Seeing all the vendors and connecting with the community there is great!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’ve had so much support and some amazing mentors throughout my journey. The one who deserves the most credit and the biggest shout-out is Jessie Kate Bui. I’ve had great mentorships with her from costume to art direction and it’s been some of the best learning experiences I’ve had.
