We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Karpeles and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sarah, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?

The single most important decision behind the success of my brand has actually been becoming a creator on TikTok. It has taken some time, but I have worked incredibly hard to build trust with engaged couples and I now am proud to say that I have a following on TikTok of about 13,000 followers (and counting!). My brand, unveiled, started from nothing. I got clients via word of mouth and through previous relationships in the events industry. But by posting free content and tips that help couples plan their own weddings, which is the flagship of my brand, I have created a name for myself in the industry.

When I first interviewed with VoyageLA, I noted that one of my main challenges was “building trust in the wedding community.” And I am happy to say that one year later, with TikTok as my main social media platform, I have been able to do just that! I have since received many leads for future unveiled clients via TikTok, and I have also started to build partnerships with other brands in the industry as well, ultimately furthering the growth of my company.

My TikTok brand has most certainly become a part of me, and a part of unveiled, that I truly love and enjoy! It’s been such a fun way for me to build my brand, interact with and help brides & grooms all over the world, and create something amazing.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

Unveiled is a DIY (do it yourself) wedding planning company that provides engaged couples with the tools and resources needed to plan their own wedding. Couples can either use unveiled for just that, tools & resources, and really DIY – or they can upgrade to the larger package that includes my guidance and help! What I created allows me to be a more accessible option for couples that really just want planning support in their planning process. I felt that there really wasn’t much of an option like what unveiled does for couples, so I wanted to fill that niche.

I am most proud of the relationships I have built with venues and vendors across Southern California. While there are so many times where I have to tell venues and vendors that the client has gone in another direction, I have always tried to remain gracious and timely to ensure that they are able to book someone else. As of recently, we planners have had to be incredibly understanding of delayed responses, supply chain issues, and price increases just because of the market we are in right now. I have really made an effort to do this with all the venues and vendors I have worked with and hope to work with in the future, while also sharing with my clients what’s happening in the market and why things are the way they are.

I am most excited about my TikTok growth!! It was certainly not easy; I really had to learn how to format videos and how to create videos that people would want to see. However, as I have understood it more and more, I have been able to build a platform that not only provides me with visibility but also allows me to give back to the wedding community.

One thing that I have learned is to always be honest and realistic with my clients. I have had many couples with certain expectations of what things should cost (of course!). However as someone with a background of luxury events and event production, I have a different perspective than most planners. I understand why catering companies charge a certain way, why events with full rentals are typically more expensive, why hotels charge the way they do, the list goes on and on. Being able to explain this to my clients has really made an impact in how they trust me and allow me to guide them to a realistic budget for what they want for their special day.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to three people. The first being Christine Bae-Sypinero who asked me out of the blue to help guide her on her wedding planning, trusting that as an events professional I knew what I was doing. I created my very first checklist for Christine, and it was really the basis of the idea behind unveiled. Christine has believed in me since before unveiled was even a concept, and I could not be more appreciative of her endless support.

I would also like to shoutout Megan & Ben Lavian, my very first paid clients, who called me less than a month after I launched unveiled, and told me that they wouldn’t trust anyone else to plan their wedding. It was at that moment I knew that I had made the right decision.
