We had the good fortune of connecting with Amaya Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amaya, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risks are challenging because it is saying I am willing to step out of what I am sure of into the unknown. Most of my life I’ve played it safe. It wasn’t until I turned 25 that I decided to take the biggest risk of my life. I moved to California with no real plan; just savings, clothes and hopes for the best. I’d say that relocating not only brought about a mind of entrepreneurship but survival and success. I think risk taking is necessary. If we hold ourselves back from what we truly desire, we’ll never see what life could have taken us. I am a believer that most of the time, not all, but most of the time taking risks will lead us to true destiny.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve always been a creative. I particularly started in photography as a favor for someone starting a business. It was crazy because I actually didn’t even own a camera at the time. I would borrow a camera and I learned the ins and outs of it from youtube, just so I could make the pictures look decent. I started shooting and it felt natural. The pictures I took looked beyond what I thought I was capable of. Once the subject posted the pictures, she would get questions like “who is your photographer”, “where can I book your photographer”? Now, I’m traveling back and forth from my hometown Kansas City to LA to take pictures full-time. Its a continued journey but I think that once you allow yourself to be open to things as small as a favor for someone, God can really show you His purpose for you. Photos by Amaya was birth with uncertainty but has prevailed into a business I couldn’t have imagined. All I know is that once you book with me, get ready to answer questions like “who is your photographer”? I’ll make you walk away from a session with more confidence, a ton of belly laughs and amazing pictures that will last for a lifetime.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Since I’m back and forth from Kansas City to LA I’ll give you a a glimpse of amazing things to do in both cities.
KC – The first stop is Gates BBQ, now if you are not from Kansas City you might be a little intimated because the women working here will give you no time to order so you better rehearse your order in the car. After we eat lets do a little shopping on the plaza, where you can also see the most beautiful fountains. While we are close lets grab some drinks at The Monarch Bar and listen to some good music and meet nice people.
LA – I love LA but I also love to escape to Laguna Beach! Mozambique is a must visit for happy hour and a beautiful view. There you will meet the most nice and successful people. Then, lets go shopping at south coast plaza. Once we want to head back to LA, lets take a drive down PCH and head to NOBU for dinner and then grab some drinks at mamas shelter. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a shoutout to the Williams Clan! My entire immediate family. They are the ones helping me behind the scenes. They are my foundation. They are right there to not only encourage me but to guide me in the right direction and I am so grateful for their support in every single thing I do and every idea I bring to them. I wouldn’t be the Amaya I am today without my clan.
