We had the good fortune of connecting with Amber Earl and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Amber, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Chris has been making commissioned furniture since 2005 but, it was always a side gig for him. I worked in sales in the fashion industry for a long time and we always thought the dream would be to join forces and start our own business together. We knew we would make a great a team, me as the business manager and him as the designer/maker. We took the leap and launched our first collection together in 2014 and it’s been so fun watching it grow ever since.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
At EARL we make everything by hand here in Los Angeles and we pride ourselves on creating quality pieces that will stand the test of time. Chris has a drive to design and create and I love getting to share his work with everyone I can. We launched a a few furniture collections at Trade Shows which helped us to gain some traction and visibility with clients and publications.
This jump started sales and awareness of our brand in the early stages.
Running your own business can be unpredictable at times, but, it’s also a ton of fun and we’re so happy we get to provide for our family by this means. We find so much joy in using our home as our showroom, and workspace. The best is when we get to invite our clients and designers into our space to find connection and meaning behind what we all do. We then find ways to invest in each other, in hopes for long lasting relationships along the way.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If we had a friend coming to visit from out of town here would be our musts:

There are so many good LA coffee spots. so if you’re only here a week you may have to hit 2 a day to get enough in. Right now we’re loving Maru, Canyon Coffee, Cafe Nido, Concierge, Cafecito Organico, G&B Coffee, Dinosaur Coffee or any of the Alfred locations.

LA Hikes are a vibe and a scene so make sure you hit the trails for a great view of city and some fun people watching… The classic is starting at Trails Cafe and then working your way up to the Griffith Park Observatory. Right now we’ve been loving hikes at Tree People and there is a “secret rainforest” if you can find it (or make it that far). Malibu Canyon hikes, or Pacific Palisades are beautiful for that beach view.

Obviously you’ve gotta go to a beach or two whether you’re going in the water or just going for a stroll in the sand. We love heading over to Malibu Lagoon, Annenberg Beach House, or jamming down south to Newport Beach or Laguna.

Museums are always a good idea to visit during the day and in the summer you can check their calendars to see what events they have going on at night because those are always a hit. Our favorites are LACMA, Getty, Science Center, Natural History Museum, The Broad, Descanso Gardens, The Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens.

We love a live show whether comedy or music… make sure to check KCRW for their list of summer nights events. If there is a show going on while in town go see something at the Hollywood Bowl or the Greek Theater. Make sure to pack a picnic to eat there before the show. Don’t Tell Comedy is a great resource for sudo speak easy comedy shows.

Last is eats and drinks. Number one best meal we’ve had in LA would be Kato over at The Row downtown and best martini at Jones. Other favorites are- Bacetti, Osteria La Buca, Saffy’s, Bestia, Rustic Canyon, Bavel, Sushi Yuzu, Le Petit Tois, Gwen and Damian.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Chris would say Stephen Ritson who took him on as an apprentice early in his furniture endeavor.
I would say Howard Highman. He was my boss in the fashion industry for 6 or so years. I learned so much from him, in terms of launching brands, and how to run a healthy business.
