We had the good fortune of connecting with Amber Williams, MBA and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amber, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I started ScentsXchange four years ago after starting my first Human Resources position and realizing it wasn’t a good fit. I was enrolling in grad school, balancing being a single mom, and making next to nothing. I found myself overwhelmed, overworked, and overstressed.
As you could probably imagine, I never made time for myself. And to be honest, I didn’t even know how to make time for myself or what self-care looked like. I just knew that I was stressed. And I was tired. It’s not until I realized that taking care of myself was the solution to my problem – and what’s crazy is that it didn’t take any extra time.
I developed a line of all-natural self-care products that relieve stress, provide relaxation, and improve your quality of sleep. I also help high performing women to create a lifestyle that they don’t have to vacation from.
After starting ScentsXchange, I quickly became the expert in self-care and I’m not only able to provide luxury products to my customers, but I am also able to teach them how to maximize their self-care so that they’re operating in it at its full capacity.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I would have to say that I am proud of my company’s success as I built it from nothing while working full-time, being a single parent, and attending grad school full-time. I am able to provide high quality products and luxury experiences to my customers. I don’t just have a candle or selfcare company. I am able to provide my customers with a whole selfcare experience while also producing products they can use to create a lifestyle that they don’t have to vacation from.
Getting to where I am today has not been a smooth road. Some of the struggles I’ve dealt with along the way were time management, consistency, and building organic traffic. Running a company isn’t easy especially when you are a parent and working a corporate job. All of my challenges tied together, but everything started with time management. Once I was able to get that under control, the rest fell into place.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Wow…this is a great question because I’m a homebody. But when I do go out I love places that have a good relaxing vibe with amazing food and drinks. Oh and brunch places are my favorite! Some of those places here in Columbus, Oh would be The Royce, Lincoln Social Rooftop, and Delmar. I mean you really can’t go wrong with going to the Short North Arts District…it has a mixture of everything to do.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would have to shout out my coach Felicia Kelly. She helped me realize that I wasn’t living to my full purpose and my business was more than just a product. She is the reason I was able to come from behind the candle (what we’re mainly known for).
