We had the good fortune of connecting with Yasmin Wade and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Yasmin, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’m a mom, who’s five year old, was suffering from extreme eczema. I was looking for a holistic alternative to cortisone creams and shots which were very expensive and only worked as a temporary treatment. The amount of cortisone that was recommended for my 5 year old daughter was making me uncomfortable, and her eczema would inevitably always come right back. I realized at that point, I needed to formulate a natural remedy. After researching oils that would be great for sensitive skin , I aimed to create a blend that would help soothe her flare-ups. So, I got cooking in my kitchen and Yassi’s Butta was born. It turned out so well that my multi-racial family started using it for different reasons including hair, lips, nails, and even as an antiperspirant. The next fun phase was sharing it in gift bags with friends and family at bridal and baby showers. Yassi’s Butta didn’t have any branding at that point. The feedback was great, and I felt I was on to something. It’s a multi-purpose, clean and organic product (so clean you can even eat it). I was like, “Hey, this is something I can share and potentially a new business!”. People started inviting me to participate at pop-ups and carry Yassi’s Butta in their boutique shops and online stores. My next level, which I’m very excited about, is taking it out of my kitchen and into an all-organic manufacturer. This way I can bring it to the masses and simply spread my Butta love. Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to be patient and allow the process to grow organically. Every step I take is coming from a relaxed space vs an every day grind. I love making my Butta and how it makes my house smell. My energy for this new endeavor is more natural and soothing, like my Butta. It’s also a great feeling when you’ve created something wonderful for your family and can happily share it with others.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m a very outdoorsy adventurous person so I definitely would take them to the beach and or any great hiking spots. Like Griffith Observatory, El Matador or Tuna Canyon Trails which has amazing beach views and is dog friendly. For eats, I love Los Angeles staples like Musso and Franks or Moon Shadows for a beautiful sunset. And being Persian, I’d take them to Little Persia which has a pocket of amazing restaurants and international markets. The historical Greek Theatre would also be a great spot for a picnic and live music.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The love and support of my family in my new adventure.
