We had the good fortune of connecting with Ambrea Curry and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ambrea, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Creativity is the true essence of who I am, so the decision to pursue my creative passions is the ultimate gift to myself. Over the years, I’ve been able to develop my talents and gifts to a place where I can monetarily benefit from them which is usually the goal for most creatives, to merge passion and profit. While I still work part-time in Corporate America, I find myself most fulfilled with my creative projects as a greater focus and I use my corporate skills as leverage in my business ventures as a creative.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I like to refer to myself as a multi-purpose woman because I literally do it all. I own two businesses, Advance Magazine and Beauty By Ambrea. I work in Corporate America part-time and I’m a professional singer/ songwriter with over 10 years of experience in the music industry as a background vocalist. Ironically, I’ve been working in each area simultaneously for years. A common thread that runs through anything that I participate in is passion. If I’m doing it, there’s passion there. I think that in and of itself sets me apart because I see many people who lack passion. Most equate passion to “a love for doing a particular thing” but I view it more as a discipline because you may not always feel good doing it or see the results that you’re looking for right away but most times a love for a thing grows in time. I’ve attained levels of success in each area simply because I put the time and work in. I’ve been able to reflect on each venture and I’m always able to identify a “wow moment” or a full circle moment and that’s a blessing. Stretching myself in multiple areas simultaneously, of course, has not always been easy but I’ve learned that I am a person who likes structure equally as much as variation and freedom. Thus, having the opportunity to be involved in many lanes allowed me to broaden my offerings as a creative and professional and make myself as indispensable as possible. A huge lesson I’ve learned is to not look at “Purpose” through a one-dimensional lens. God is the master creator so if He can be all things then certainly his children don’t have to live life boxed in. There are many rooms waiting for me to enter and leave my mark. My brand is still evolving and changing as I grow and change and I’m perfectly ok with that so I’ll stick to the plan until God reroutes me.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My city, Detroit, is truly a vibe. My favorite things to do are trying new restaurants with girlfriends. A new Asian inspired restaurant called Hannah Steakhouse just opened and that’s where I’m headed next. Of course, roaming around downtown and doing some shopping would be next, the alley has some great black owned shops. I also enjoy concerts because there’s really no concert experience like a Detroit one. I feel like if you’re from Detroit, you make fun out of anything and anywhere.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shoutout goes to my Mother Tiffanie Willis-Bradley and family for their support & encouragement no matter what creative project or business I take on. A group of 30+ plus women from all over the world who partnered with me to bring Advance Magazine to life and last but not least, the ultimate creative, God who saw fit to share some of the genius with me.
