We had the good fortune of connecting with Nihal Ruparel and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nihal, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
It’s not wether I’m going to decide to keep going or give up. It’s just that I know that I love creating enough to know that I can’t. It’s almost as if you need to keep building yourself and some days might not be your best, some days you might not feel like going and doing something, but you do need to know that you’re trying your best for the day regardless. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but things will work out if you put the hours in and are persistent..

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a filmmaker and a photographer. I’ve often had a hard time communicating what I wanted to say and was super frustrated with my life before I found this creative output. Honestly changed the way I saw things and to be honest I had been making YouTube videos since I was 13/14 years old but Things changed for me very suddenly when I was 17 and I wrote a dm to probably one of the top social media companies in india not knowing the outcome of what it’d be and boom I was in touch with some of the top people in the industry at 17. This sort of kickstarted my career into this world and thankfully this allowed me to travel a lot, which was my dream since I was a kid. I visited countries like turkey, Maldives and Singapore for client projects which were huge and never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d get to do this. Pushing things forward I decided not to go to college but instead come to la and do a short course in direction and cinematography at UCLA. This was a super hard decision knowing that I had a steady source of income and a good life in india. Right now I’m spending a lot of my time trying to learn more to do better in my skill set. This journey in la has taken me up and down through the lowest moments of my life to probably being in the best thought ever.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was coming to la, I would no doubt take him/her to Venice beach. But if it was a long weekend probably to Joshua tree since it’s the closest place I know where you can go stargazing.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Where I am in life right now wouldn’t be possible without the help of my mentors and idols. Firstly theres my family, knowing the fact that art and creativity isn’t supported as much in india my parents decided to believe in me and invested in my life not caring what the outcome would be. Secondly There’s 3 very important friends Infact they’re my second family who taught me everything I know. They’re in Los Angeles with me and I’m so glad they’re a part of my life. And lastly there are the video creators online who if I didn’t know about I probably wouldn’t be here.
