Meet Amira Outlaw | Self Made

We had the good fortune of connecting with Amira Outlaw and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amira, can you tell us about a book that has had a meaningful impact on you?
Tupac Shakur – “ The Rose That Grew From Conrete”
In particular the poem titled “If I Fail”
The book was a gift back in 2000 and I read it from cover to cover I have lost count how many times since then. I have memorized that poem and it is probably the only poem I know by heart by any author. The poem spoke to me on so many levels. I grew up without a father and although my mom barely showed the struggle at times things were rough.
Aside from that it wasn’t just another published poetry book. I was able to read it through his handwriting. Without shame and all mistakes.
I write a lot of poetry in hopes of one day publishing work has honest, non regretful, and inspiring as “ The Rose That Grew From Conrete” Tupac

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I wanted to start my own after school program 100% free. From resume building to lunch to dinner meals for my community. Working a 9-5 for someone else’s dream was not going to get me there. I started with 4 t shirts in March of 2019. You have to want it not just dream it. Know there’s good and bad days and take them equally. I am very hands on with 90% of the designing of my clothes. From warehouse wholesale shopping to colors, printing, pressing, tagging, and bagging. I also host networking events and community givebacks. I’m currently enrolled in the EPI program at Rutgers University. In between time I deliver for Uber Eats and Instacart. Sometimes I even eat standing up lol. I really don’t sit still.
You can shop my brand at 4 different retail locations: LIVINGSTON MALL (NJ), DOVER MALL(DELAWARE), IDEVINE APPAREL (Jersey City,NJ), OUTLAW APPAREL 1988 (Jersey City, NJ)

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’m the second oldest of 6 raised by a single mother. I get my hustle from my mother. She is beyond my motivation but my family as a whole is my reason.
