We had the good fortune of connecting with Ana Gómez Villafañe and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ana, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I don’t think I had to make a choice, in the sense that I never gave it a second thought, nor did I ever feel I had to choose. I was born and raised in a small town in Patagonia, Argentina. Most of my early memories of childhood are of me spending time in nature, drawing, and observing the world around me with a curious eye. In a way, it just came naturally. But I also think my environment played a big role in developing that creative inclination as I grew up, and by the time I was off to College it was very clear that if I didn’t spend my adult life pursuing some career path in the arts, I would not feel connected to myself.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I draw my inspiration from the natural world. My photographs and paintings are always connected to some natural element. I am proud that I’ve always kept pushing myself to learn something new, that I keep an open mind towards creativity and what it means to create. That I am always changing, evolving, adapting, and reconsidering too. The fact that the exploration and surprise that comes from that journey is never ending, is what keeps me excited and going. I’ve learned to be patient with myself in the journey by understanding that the path goes up, down, and sideways as I move towards something that’s not always so clear. And that the destination, or the way I envision things, keeps changing as I go through those experiences. Through it all, I’ve always been able to remain gentle with myself, in what has always felt a complex and demanding world that pushes us in so many directions.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I moved to L.A a little over a year ago, so I don’t really consider myself an expert in the area since there’s so much for me to still see and explore. So far, I’ve enjoyed the many possibilities for hikes in this area, especially around Los Angeles National Forest. I also love everything along the Pacific Coast Hwy, the beaches, little shops and markets along the way. The botanical gardens in this area are a gem and was not expecting! I particularly enjoy Descanso Gardens and Los Angeles County Arboretum. Also, the Getty Museum! What a beautiful place to not only see art but also admire its location and views!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mom, who has always been a source of encouragement, inspiration, and support.
