We had the good fortune of connecting with Ana Ortiz Wienken and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ana, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind success is transparency and honesty. Whether it is in regard to your former project or even admitting a mistake, honesty is crucial for a successful career.

In regards to my personal experience, all works, collaborations, concerts, awards, lectures that I have been part of, are all documented in video, photo and even on written and signed forms. These elements will be your building blocks for your career.

Also, humanism in building true strong relationships with your clients, is a key to success. We don’t like a superficial “hello”, or “how was the weekend Tom?” but a real heartfelt conversation with anyone implied in the production process, we really do care a lot for the well-being of the team. 🙂

In the end, our beloved crew, clients, runners, gaffers, actors, composers… all of them play a significant role in the industry and if one wins, we all do. Therefore it is crucial to really take true care of the people who are making the biggest effort, doing their best and helping everything work.

Finally, staying humble and grateful is critical. In this industry we have been working with celebrities, amazing musicians, producers and hard winning composers, which sometimes can inflate our egos but we always have to remain humble and grateful. There are very few people who can grow a career from music, it is not easy at all and only a small percent of the population can rely on music solely, therefore having a successful career in music is one thing to be grateful for.

I want to mention as well, don’t forget the humanitarian part of being a successful composer! I mean, it is awesome seeing brands like Netflix rely on your work and having credits on movie theaters, but how about playing music at a hospital? … Or at a school for children?
There are many ways in which we can add ease to those who are really suffering. As musicians we are spiritual connectors to the well being and we must never forget that our music comes from goodness and to serve a positive purpose in society.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am the production coordinator and composer of a sound production company based in Madrid, Los Angeles, New York and Buenos Aires. What I am most proud of, is that I can count with an honest, transparent, reliable and hyper talented team. We are experts on the “craft” of sound and music. This is a unique touch the many well known brands are trusting in and we are always grateful for it.

I started working in Los Angeles as an intern at Music studios like Music and Motion Productions (working on “Elite on Netflix), and then for involved on more complex projects, including the music supervision of the recording of Game of Thrones soundtrack at Berklee, Music Copywriter for BMI members and Studio Coordinator overseas (releasing campaigns for BHD Bank, Netflix, AMADITA Labs…)

It wasn’t easy at all, I had to overcome many challenges like dealing with very tight deadlines and little time of work, multiple changes from overlapping projects and some difficult egos, however, all work I done has always come from the heart and with an open mind, always willing to learn new skills, so eventually I overcome those challenges.

The lessons I learnt are: 1) Always stay open minded, 2) Never take anything personally and 3) Stay active, go to all music related events, network, play, jam sessions… Meet new friends and possible collaborations.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them “Cafe Berlin” in Madrid, an iconic music hall where you can hear the best musicians playing jazz, funk, pop and even electronic music. It is a hotspot for creatives and talents.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
As surprising as it may sound, I would like to dedicate this shoutout to the tough parts of our lives. because without them, we wouldn’t have grown a shield, a personality, a sense of justice or tenacity.

It is in the hard times where we get to see our true Innes strength and we all are capable of overcoming any rock in our paths. This is dedicated to all of you who are currently going through hard times, there is a light, there is hope and you will get through all what comes to you.

Shout-out to all musicians struggling and making the biggest effort in doing their best in the industry.

I hope you find peace and courage reading this interview and always root for getting better everyday.
